Despite a late start due to inclement weather, the Georgia men’s tennis team showed no signs of slowing down as it took home wins in six-of-eight singles matches to close the Miami Invitational on Sunday afternoon.

Much like the first day of competition, the Bulldogs sealed four straight-set victories against Wisconsin to jumpstart the final day. First, back-to-back freshman wins from Tyler Zink and Erik Grevelius put Georgia on the board. Zink’s and Grevelius’ victories pushed their singles record to 5-0 for the tournament.

Senior Robert Loeb and sophomore Trent Bryde rounded out the Bulldogs’ straight-set wins. Freshman Baptiste Anselmo, who won in a tiebreaker, and senior Alex Phillips added the final two wins for Georgia.

“There were four rain delays, but our guys did a great job of staying focused,” Georgia head coach Manuel Diaz said. “I saw a lot of growth from this young team, and I’m very pleased with our results. We still have a lot of work to do, and in no way are we where we want to be, but it’s a really encouraging start. I see so much hunger in this group of guys, and we’re just very excited.”

Freshmen Zink and Grevelius grabbed Georgia’s first two wins of the day. Zink defeated Wisconsin sophomore Lenard Soha 6-2, 6-1. In a Bulldog-Badger freshman matchup, Grevelius took down Robin Parts by the same score (6-2, 6-1). 

Seniors Loeb and Phillips finished the weekend 2-0 in singles. Loeb performed to a 6-2, 6-4 win over redshirt-sophomore Martim Vilela (Wisconsin), while Phillips finished on top with an 8-6 advantage over Daniel Nuzhny (Wisconsin). 

After dropping his first singles match of the tournament, Georgia’s Bryde redeemed himself by going 2-0 the last two days, including a win over one of the top players in the country in Texas’ Christian Sigsgaard. The sophomore Bulldog, who ranks No. 57 in the latest ITA rankings, ousted senior Badger Chase Colton by a score of 6-3, 6-4. 

Georgia’s Anselmo, a native of France, capped off competition at the Miami Invitational. In a tiebreaker, the freshman defeated Wisconsin’s Gabriel Huber 7-6 (9-7), 7-5.

Next, the Bulldogs return home to take on the Kennesaw State Owls on Monday, Jan. 20, at 2 p.m. It will be Georgia’s first match of the 2020 season at the newly-renovated Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
