Bulldawg Illustrated intern Savannah Richardson, a senior in the Grady College of Journalism at UGA, takes a look the College Football Playoff National Championship game between Georgia and Alabama, and who gets ‘The Bone’ for having the edge.

 

OFFENSE DAWG BONE: GEORGIA

 
Georgia receives the offense Dawg Bone because of its ability to keep a balanced offense. After starting the season off with a run-heavy offense, it had to rely on the passing game to get to the National Championship. Jake Fromm doesn’t have to pass much, but when he does, it keeps the momentum alive. Targets like Javon Wims and Terry Godwin make Fromm’s job look effortless and I expect to see them continue to make plays in Atlanta.

 

Of course, the Bulldogs have its rush attack with Thunder, Lightning, and Tsunami Swift, but it proved that the passing game is just as good. Fromm’s proven his worth and doesn’t show his age at all. He loves to play in big moments and as it gets bigger Fromm performs better on the stage. Fromm completes 63.7 percent of his passes and averages 170 yards in the air. His ability to make plays in the air adds a nice option for the Bulldogs to use when defenses shut down the ground game.
 

DEFENSE DAWG BONE: ALABAMA AND GEORGIA

 
The National Championship will be one of the most evenly matched games this season. Both teams are top 5 defenses in the country and are why they are in the ‘big game.’ This game will be one of the most physical and defensive ball games of the season.

 

Alabama ranks nationally as the No. 1 rush defense allowing 91.77 yards on the ground, which will prove challenging for the Bulldogs. However, Georgia has an impressive group as well. The two defenses are two of the most equally matched unit, but it will be Georgia’s tenacity that sets the edge on defense. Defense wins championships and whatever team plays better on defense will be the 2018 National Champion.
 

SPECIAL TEAM DAWG BONE: GEORGIA

 
Georgia has one of the best special teams groups in the SEC. Rodrigo Blankenship’s ability to keep opponents from returning kickoffs will be tremendous in the National Championship. He’s kicked 64 touchbacks, and I expect he will be juiced up for this one. However, the Bulldogs get the special team’s Dawg Bone for Mecole Hardman’s ability to set the offense up with exceptional field position. He averages 11.29 yards a punt and 27.35 on kickoffs. It’s time for him to rip a return and it just might happen in Atlanta.
 

COACHING DAWG BONE: ALABAMA

 
Nick Saban receives the Dawg Bone because it’s hard not to give one of the greatest coaches in college football credit where it’s due. He’s coached Alabama to a fourth consecutive college football playoff and a third appearance in the title game. If any coach knows how to win a national championship, it will be Saban. He will have his team prepared and ready to fight a hot Georgia.
