The Georgia Bulldogs fell to the No. 16 Ole Miss Rebels by a score of 28-10 in front of a sold-out Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.
The game couldn’t have started much better for the Bulldogs. After two straight failed plays, Rebels quarterback Jaxson Dart threw an interception to Dan Jackson at their own 34 yard line. On fourth down and goal, Smart elected to go for it and succeeded with a touchdown rush from Nate Frazier. Unfortunately for Georgia, this would be the last time they crossed the goal line. Ole Miss quickly responded, scoring on a rushing touchdown from Ulysses Bentley. Coach Kiffin’s offense scored 16 unanswered points to take a 16-7 lead into the locker room.
Coming out of the half, a touchdown drive by Beck and the offense was just what Georgia needed to swing the momentum. They were able to march right down to the red zone, but were only able to come away with three points to make the score 16-10. The Rebels scored their second and final touchdown of the game shortly after when Dart found wide receiver Antwane Wells for a ten-yard reception.
In yet another must-score scenario, the Georgia offense had the turnover bug bite them when it hurt the most. Frazier fumbled after catching a pass inside the Ole Miss 30, resulting in yet another failed scoring drive.
The next Georgia drive was a similar result: a turnover in Ole Miss territory. On fourth-and-ten, Beck tried to find Dominic Lovett but was intercepted by John Saunders. This all but ended Georgia’s hopes of a comeback, as momentum was just too far in the Rebels’ favor.
After the game, Coach Smart addressed what’s next for his team:
“Only thing I’m worried about is how we get better tomorrow….. it’s a long journey, and you got to play the next play, you got to play the next game and that’s the goal for this group.”
Next weekend, the Bulldogs will host the No. 7 Tennessee Volunteers in what will be an elimination game for Georgia in terms of the College Football Playoff. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 P.M. on ABC.
