Kirby Smart told the media on Tuesday that sophomore Peyton Woodring will maintain his position as the field goal and extra point kicker for the Dawgs. The Lafayette, LA native went 21-25 (FGs) during his freshman season with a long of 48 yards. Woodring was ranked as the number one kicker (via 247Sports) in the 2023 class. He holds the record for the longest field goal in Louisiana High School football history. During his last regular season high school game, he drilled a 60 yarder. There was never much of a concern over losing his job, but Georgia did add Duke transfer Charlie Ham during this past offseason.
Charlie Ham is back with his former special teams coach, Kirk Benedict, who was promoted to the special teams coordinator role in February of this year. Ham’s commitment came after Georgia kicker Jared Zirkel announced his decision to transfer to Texas A&M on December 31st. During the 2023 season, Zirkel was in charge of kickoffs. Although nothing has been made official, Ham is expected to assume this same kickoff role with the team. He played high school ball at Westminster and is returning to his home state for his fifth season of collegiate football.
The addition of Charlie Ham provides Georgia with a relatively experienced special teams unit. Ham has four years of experience playing in the ACC. Peyton Woodring returns as the starter with a full season under his belt. In addition, Australian and fan-favorite, Brett Thorson, is back for his third season as the Dawgs’ punter.
