Georgia track and field’s Quintunya Chapman and Garrett Scantling shattered school records en route to collegiate all-time top-10 scores to sweep the Bulldog Decathlon/Heptathlon in Athens, Ga., on Thursday afternoon.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Chapman, a senior from Hinesville, Ga., passed the 11-year-old school record of 6,033 set by 2008 Olympic silver medalist Hyleas Fountain with 6,146 points, which stands No. 2 on the current world list and leads the NCAA. Chapman’s score makes her the No. 8 all-time collegiate performer and is the No. 11 all-time collegiate performance.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Scantling, a junior from Jacksonville, Fla., bested teammate Maicel Uibo’s school record 8,223 points scored to win the 2013 Bulldog Decathlon and took over the world’s top score in 2015. Scantling’s mark, which toppled the current NCAA leader by 700 points, makes him the No. 9 all-time collegiate performer with the No. 12 all-time collegiate performance.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Chapman and Scantling combined for 18 personal-best efforts over the two-day competitions, including day one personal records and career-best total scores.
[su_spacer size=”40″] In addition, sophomore Devon Williams scored the nation’s fourth-best total with a career-best score of 7,341 points for fifth place. This moves Williams to No. 8 in Georgia’s record books.
[su_spacer size=”40″] “Words can’t explain how excited I am for both Quintunya and Garrett,” said Bulldog associate head coach and multis coach Petros Kyprianou. “Their performances are world class, hit Olympic and world standards and ranked among the elite all-time. What makes this feeling special is that both have never done the multis prior to college.
[su_spacer size=”40″] “In fact, for Quintunya, this is her second year ever in the multis. They started as ‘multi projects’ and patiently underwent this transformation and I thank them for allowing me to sharpen their skills in a relatively intense way. To get to this kind of level and score over 8, 200 points in the decathlon and over 6,100 points in the heptathlon, it takes talent and extreme hard work and discipline.
[su_spacer size=”40″] “Their personalities, character and integrity complement their talent. Devon also did a good job putting a decent score together and shows he is about to put together another great multi year come championship time. This also proves for the third straight year that the Bulldog Decathlon/Heptathlon meet is the best in the country. The Spec Towns Track is a magical place for hosting combined event and elite competitions!”
[su_spacer size=”20″] [su_spacer size=”20″] Chapman captured the Bulldog Heptathlon title in dramatic fashion. The Hinesville, Ga., native finished seven seconds in front of the field in the 800-meter run with a personal-best 2:14.22. This capped a 487-point improvement from her total score at last year’s meet here in Athens. In addition to the accolades listed above, Chapman also bested teammate Kendell Williams’ Spec Towns Track record of 6,018 from last year.
[su_spacer size=”40″] The ninth-best long jump mark in school history earned Chapman a sizable personal best to start her second day. She progressively improved in her three-jump series, topping out at a 20 feet, 6 ½ inches for 930 points. Chapman stands in the top 10 nationally in the long jump with her career-best effort.
[su_spacer size=”40″] In the javelin, Chapman hit yet another personal-best mark of 138-10 to finish third with 712 points. This bettered her previous personal record in the event by more nearly 30 feet and set her up for her run in the 800.
[su_spacer size=”40″] In the decathlon, Scantling jumpstarted his day two by running a career-best time of 14.21 to finish second in the 110 hurdles. He trimmed .04 seconds off his time from the NCAA Championships last season to score 948 points and strengthen his top spot.

[su_spacer size=”40″] Williams improved 16 feet between his first and third attempts in the discus and finished with a mark of 134-3 for 683 points. This effort added 14 feet to his previous personal best in the discus and a foot to his throw at USAs two years ago.
[su_spacer size=”40″] The Marietta, Ga., native made big strides in the pole vault as well as on the way to his career-best performance. Williams went over the bar at 14-11 on his second attempt for 775 points after never reaching 14 feet before in his career.
