The Georgia football team released their updated roster on Tuesday, and there weren’t too many surprises. Well, not yet at least.
The Bulldogs currently have 85 spots for scholarship athletes, but the current roster reflects that the team has 89 total players. By the start of fall, the team will have to make it down to that 85 mark before classes start on Aug. 20.
UGA also reported on Tuesday that in-person classes will conclude at the Thanksgiving Break and the remaining coursework and exams will be taken online. Final exams are set for the week of Dec. 11-17.
All 25 of Georgia’s signees are shown on the roster, along with transfers Jamie Newman, J.T. Daniels, Austin Kirskey and Tre’ McKitty. The incoming freshman currently don’t have numbers listed as of Wednesday. The three players who all decided to enter the NCAA Student Athlete transfer portal during the offseason – Prather Hudson, Robert Beal and John Seter – are all listed on the roster. Redshirt senior offensive guard Ben Cleveland is also listed on the roster after missing the Sugar Bowl due to academic ineligibility, which was reported by 247Sports.
Summer Workouts Update
Since June 8, the team has been participating in voluntary workouts that are supervised by the UGA Strength and Conditioning staff. Due the lack of spring practice, some players may have fell behind on their works. So, hopefully this time will help them get accustomed back to normal conditioning.
Recently, the NCAA finally implemented a preseason plan that would start in mid-July. The NCAA Division I Council approved a model for a summer schedule prior to fall camp as teams start to prepare for the 2020 season amongst the coronavirus pandemic.
Teams that have a scheduled season-opening game on Sept. 5 can have players participate in up to eight hours a week of conditioning, weight training and film review from July 13-23.
From July 24 through Aug. 6, players can participate in up to 20 hours a week of team activities. That includes up to eight hours a week of weight training and conditioning. Then, up to six hours a week of walk throughs that can include a football, and up to six hours a week of meetings and film review. The NCAA will require players to have at least two days off a week during this two week period.
The NCAA’s summer workout plan would lead into an unchanged fall camp schedule that would be set to start on Aug. 7. Teams can have up to 25 total practices during that time span.
