Former University of Georgia All-American and three-time NFL Super Bowl champion Richard Seymour has been elected to the South Carolina Football Hall of Fame according to an announcement by the organization Thursday.

The enshrinement ceremony is scheduled for Thursday, April 19, at the Embassy Suites at Verdae in Greenville, S.C.  The other four inductees include John Abraham (University of South Carolina), Dwight Clark (Clemson University ), Paul Maguire (The Citadel), and Clay Matthews Sr. (Georgia Tech/Legacy Inductee).

Among many great defensive linemen to wear the Red and Black, Richard Seymour stands with the best during his playing career from 1997-2000.

At 6’ 6” 300 lbs., Seymour was a nightmare for opposing offenses.  A native of Gadsden, South Carolina, Seymour played a total of 41 games for the Bulldogs, starting 25 of those games.

In 1999, Seymour led the Bulldogs with 74 tackles, becoming one of only two defensive linemen in Georgia history to lead the team in tackles for a season.  Following his junior season, Seymour was elected as a permanent team captain by his teammates.

Seymour was a two-time All-SEC first-team selection and was named a first team All-American in 2000. He ended his career in Athens with a total of 233 tackles, 26 tackles-for-loss, and 10 sacks.

The New England Patriots took Seymour with the number six overall pick in the 2001 NFL draft.  With the Patriots, Seymour won three Super Bowl rings and was named to seven Pro-Bowl Teams.  Over his 12 seasons in the NFL, he spent eight seasons with the Patriots and four with the Oakland Raiders. Seymour’s storied career led him to be named to the Patriots 50th Anniversary Team, All-2000s Team, and the NFL 2000s All-Decade Team.  In 2017, he was named a Pro Football Hall of Fame semifinalist in his first year of eligibility.

In 2015, he was inducted into the Georgia-Florida Hall of Fame and was also named one of the “Legends of SEC Football.”  In 2017, the three time Super Bowl champion established the Richard Seymour Family Endowed Scholarship and also made a gift to the Sanford Stadium west end zone project  currently under way.
