Roquan Smith is Georgia’s leading tackler and he’s looking forward to the challenge of facing another dual-threat quarterback in Georgia’s SEC opener, as Mississippi State’s Nick Fitzgerald will be his competition this upcoming Saturday.
Fitzgerald threw for over 2,423 passing yards and ran for 1,375 rushing yards last season, so he has already displayed the ability to have success as a quarterback through the air and on the ground. Fitzgerald is on pace to have another stellar season in both passing and rushing and he should present a huge challenge to the Georgia defense as they battle between the hedges.
Roquan Smith is looking forward to the challenge he will present to not only himself but also the other 10 members that will be on the field with him as they attempt to slow down Mississippi State’s potent offense. Smith mentioned that one of the main goals of the defense will be to stop Mississippi State’s run and make them more one-dimensional.
“It’s a huge challenge, they pride themselves on running the ball and we pride ourselves on stopping the run so like them coming into Sanford, I’m looking forward to it and it’s a great opportunity,” said Smith. “We pride ourselves on stopping the run so like if you pride yourself on something that’s definitely going to be a priority, so it’s going into every game saying we’re gonna stop the run so that’s our main focus in making them one-dimensional and we’ll go from there.”
Fitzgerald and the Mississippi State offense have run the ball very well this season, but Smith and the Bulldogs have had just as much success in stopping the run. This will be an intriguing matchup to watch as it could be the determining factor in which set of Bulldogs walks out of Sanford Stadium with a huge top 25 SEC win.
