Georgia’s Roquan Smith has been named one of the finalists for the 2017 Bronko Nagurski Trophy. The award is given out each year to the nation’s top defensive player in college football as voted on by the Foot Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) and the Charlotte Touchdown Club.
Roquan is a junior inside linebacker with the Bulldogs who has made plays all over the field for Georgia this season, racking up a team-leading 82 tackles through 10 games including 4.5 tackles for a loss, 2.5 QB sacks, 5 QB hurries, 1 forced fumble, and 2 passes broken up.
Smith signed with the University of Georgia in the Class of 2015 recruiting class for the Bulldogs out of Macon High School in Montezuma, GA. In his three years at UGA, he has played in 35 games, 20 of them as a starter. The talented linebacker has already been named a Midseason All-American and a Bednarik Award semifinalist
He joins North Carolina State defensive end Bradley Chubb, Alabama safety Minkah Fitzpatrick, Iowa middle linebacker Josey Jewell and Houston defensive tackle Ed Oliver as the five finalists for this year’s Bronko Nagurski Trophy.
The Bronko Nagurski Trophy Award Banquet will be held on Monday, December 4th, at the Charlotte Convention Center, and Georgia Head Coach Kirby Smart will be the keynote speaker at the banquet.
DID YOU KNOW?
The only Georgia player to win the Bronko Nagurski Trophy is former Bulldog and NFL veteran Champ Bailey who won the honor back in 1998. Former Georgia linebackers Justin Houston (2010) and Jarvis Jones (2012) have also been finalists for the award along with former Georgia All-American and current ESPN announcer David Pollack, who was a finalist in 2002 and 2004.
