Oklahoma’s Lincoln Riley told a story about running into Georgia coach Kirby Smart shortly after this year’s Rose Bowl matchup was announced.
While Riley was in Atlanta for the College Football Awards show early this month, he ran into Smart at a Georgia high school. Both were recruiting a target at that school.
“It’s kind of funny. We were waiting for like a crowd of reporters to come out of the side,” Riley said Wednesday during a news conference at Disneyland in Anaheim, California. “I thought it might have been staged in a way. It was funny. We were both going solo. We joked about that because so many head coaches, when they recruit, travel with one or two other staff members. We were both going solo, young guys going at it like we’re assistants. So we had a laugh about it, spent a few minutes there. He’s a great guy. I’ve got a ton of respect for him for the job he’s done there.”

Oklahoma enters the Rose Bowl as the higher seeded team. It will wear the home jerseys and Georgia the visiting white. And yet …
“Yeah. We understand we’re the underdog,” Sooners offensive tackle Orlando Brown said. “And we prefer it that way. It helps us stay focused as a team.”
A couple of feet away, Brown’s teammate Mark Andrews, an All-America tight end, sounded a similar theme.
“I don’t know if we ever get enough respect, but that doesn’t matter to us,” Andrews said. “We feel like we play better with a chip on our shoulder.”

Correct me if I’m wrong, but doesn’t Georgia football strike you as sort of normal? Not normal as in average. Normal as in not kooky. Normal as in Michigan or Penn State or Oklahoma or Nebraska or Notre Dame or Southern Cal. Normal as in passionate and dedicated and over the moon about the football team in Athens. But also normal as in not still fighting the Civil War.

Chuck Neinas has a nickname for Monday’s Rose Bowl semifinal between Georgia and Oklahoma.
“The Supreme Court Bowl,” said Neinas, the longtime college football power broker.
It’s all because of precedent. The last time these two storied programs shared such a big national stage, they shook the foundation of the sport for decades to come.
But it didn’t happen on the field. Monday’s matchup actually will be the first time the two have faced each other in more than 1,200 games apiece since the 1890s.
Both instead joined forces against the NCAA in a case that went all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court in 1984. They won a 7-2 decision, allowing schools and conferences to make their own deals for television coverage instead of having a heavy-handed NCAA control it as a monopoly.
