The 15th-ranked Georgia softball team dropped both of its games at day two of the St. Pete/Clearwater Elite Invitational Saturday.

Georgia (8-2) dropped a 5-2 decision to 17th-ranked Texas Tech to begin the day then fell to third-ranked UCLA in the nightcap, 8-3.

The Red Raiders (7-1) handed Georgia its first loss of the 2020 season to begin the Bulldogs’ second day in Clearwater, 5-2.

Georgia scattered seven hits to Texas Tech’s eight but was held to only two runs. Senior Jordan Doggett recorded two hits to lead the Bulldogs, her fourth multi-hit game of the season and scored both of Georgia’s runs.

Mary Wilson Avant (4-1) suffered her first loss of the season in the circle, allowing four runs, two unearned, in five and a third innings. Junior Lauren Mathis worked the final two-thirds of an inning in relief.

Texas Tech loaded the bases with no out to begin the game. A base hit into center plated the first run but sophomore CJ Landrum got the ball in to hold the runner at third. Texas Tech’s second run scored on an error by sophomore Savana Sikes. Avant was able to limit the damage and strand the bases loaded with a strikeout to end the inning, down 2-0.

Doggett led off the top of the fourth inning with a triple, her team-leading third of the season, ripped down the right-field line. She immediately scored on an RBI base hit by sophomore Lacey Fincher, cutting Texas Tech’s lead in half, 2-1.

The Red Raiders brought the lead back to two in the bottom of the inning with back-to-back doubles to lead off the frame, 3-1.

Doggett began the sixth inning with her second leadoff hit of the game, an infield single to second. Freshman Sara Mosley knocked a one-out base hit up the middle and both runners advanced into scoring position. A slow roller to second off the bat of senior Justice Milz plated Doggett to cut the lead to one again, 3-2. On the play, Mosely was tagged out at home, ending the inning.

Texas Tech’s Breanna Russell sent a two-out, two-run home run over the wall down the left-field line in the bottom of the sixth to widen the final margin to three, 5-2.

3 UCLA 8, #15 Georgia 3

As an offense, Georgia recorded six hits off the Bruins, led by another two-hit game by Doggett along with a pair of hits by freshman Sydney Kuma.

Senior Alley Cutting (1-1) pitched two innings in her start, allowing six runs. Mathis made her second appearance in the circle of the day, pitching the final four innings, allowing two runs, and striking out eight Bruins.

The Bruins (9-0) loaded the bases and used a single through the left side to take a first-inning 1-0 lead. UCLA loaded the bases again in the second. A single back up the middle plated another Bruin run. With two out, Jenavee Perez hit a three-run home run to open a 6-0 lead on the Bulldogs after two innings. UCLA tacked on another run in the third to bring the lead to 7-0.

Georgia used a leadoff single by Doggett and back-to-back pitcher fielding errors to load the bases in the fourth. Kuma dropped a single into left, plating Doggett and putting Georgia on the board. Senior Mahlena O’Neal then drew a bases-loaded walk to drive in another run for the Bulldogs, 7-2.

UCLA got one run back in the home half of the fourth inning to widen the lead back to six, 8-2.

Down to the final out, Senior Ciara Bryan knocked her sixth home run of the season, a solo shot to centerfield to bring the final tally to 8-3.

Georgia wraps up play in Clearwater bright and early Sunday with a 9 a.m. game against South Florida. The Bulldogs return to Athens and will host Samford at Jack Turner Stadium on Wednesday.
