A seven-run outburst lifted Longwood past Georgia 7-3 Friday at Foley Field.
[su_spacer size=”40″] The Lancers (5-6) began the rally with a two-out walk in the sixth as nine straight batters reached base. Until that point, Bulldog starter Ryan Lawlor and Lancer right-hander Aaron Myers were locked in a pitcher’s duel.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Lawlor provided 5.2 scoreless innings and then ultimately allowed seven runs, only three earned, to fall to 2-2. Myers went 7.1 innings and scattered three runs on seven hits to pick up a victory and even his record to 2-2. Senior Brandon Vick came on to record the last out and register a save. With the loss, Georgia drops to 8-5 on the year.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Colton Konvicka and Michael Isonski had two RBI apiece to pace the Lancers attack. Bulldog
senior first baseman Daniel Nichols hit his second home run of the year to get Georgia on the scoreboard in the bottom of the 7th. The Bulldogs added two more runs in the eighth but stranded 12 men overall on base in the contest. Freshman Keegan McGovern went 2-for-2 for the Bulldogs and Zack Bowers went 1-for-2 with three walks. A bright spot from the Bulldog bullpen came from senior Taylor Hicks who provided three scoreless innings with five strikeouts.
[su_spacer size=”40″] “We didn’t play very well at all, too many fly ball outs, and we couldn’t get a hit with a runner in scoring positions, we were 0-for-12. When Longwood had their chances to score, they competed and came through, they were 5-for-10 with runners on base,” Georgia coach Scott Stricklin said. “The way we played, that’s how you lose a Friday night game on your home field. I’ve challenged them and we’ll see how they respond.”
[su_spacer size=”40″] The series continues Saturday with first pitch slated for 2:05 p.m.
