The University of Georgia swimming and diving team has signed 27 student-athletes for the 2021 signing class, as announced by Tom Cousins Swimming and Diving Head Coach Jack Bauerle Friday afternoon.
One of the largest classes in Georgia history includes student-athletes from three countries, 12 states, two divers, one transfer, and three Athens natives. With a breakdown of 14 men and 13 women, the new class features multiple state champions and record-holders, as well as veterans of national and international competitions.
“We are excited to welcome this impressive class of signees to our program,” said Bauerle. “Each of our signees have already impressed in their junior careers and we look forward to furthering their development here in Athens. We are always working to field a deep and competitive roster, and I have no doubt that this group’s ability and character will make us a better team. They have already been successful and will be even more so after they arrive. Go Dawgs!”
Mia Abruzzo | Plymouth Meeting, Pa. | Notre Dame Academy | Plymouth Whitemarsh Aquatic Club
Events: Freestyle / Butterfly / IM
Mia Abruzzo, the younger sister of current Georgia junior All-American Andrew Abruzzo, swims for Plymouth Whitemarsh Aquatic Club under coaches Richard Shoulberg and Caroline Boland. Abruzzo was a five-time champion at the Eastern Interscholastic Swimming Championships, including back-to-back titles in the 200-yard IM. She was also a six-time champion at the Pennsylvania Independent Schools championships, highlighted by three consecutive victories in the 200-yard IM. She earned six championships at the Middle Atlantic Senior Short Course Championship and two titles at the Senior Short Course Championships. In national competition, she reached the finals in four events at the 2019 National Championships and has competed in multiple TYR Pro Series meets. She was named to the USA Swimming Scholastic All-America Team in 2020.

Jackson Bates swims for Westminster Christian Academy under coach Robert Wylie and for Athens Bulldog Swim Club under coaches Harvey Humphries and Martin Grodzki. Bates won two titles at the 2019 Georgia Senior Short Course Championships, finishing first in the 100-yard and 200-yard breaststroke. He took first in the 100-meter and 200-meter breaststroke finals at the 2019 USA Swimming Southern Zones Age Group Championship, along with qualifying for the breaststroke events at the 2019 Speedo Winter Junior Nationals. He also finished first in the 50-yard breaststroke and 100-yard IM at the 2017 GICAA State Championships. He was named to the USA Swimming Scholastic All-America Team in 2019 and 2020.

Reese Branzell swims for Lake Lytal Lightning under coach Keith Coghlan. Branzell was a three-time Florida 2A state champion with back-to-back titles in the 100-yard freestyle and a 2019 title in the 200-yard freestyle, along with three regional championships. He took first in the 100-meter freestyle in consecutive years at the Florida Gold Coast Senior Long Course Championships, in addition to a win in the 100-meter butterfly in 2019. In other state competition, he won consecutive titles in the 50-yard freestyle and one title in the 100-yard freestyle at the Florida Gold Coast Senior Championships. He qualified for three events at the 2019 U.S. Open, reaching the finals in the 50-meter and 100-meter freestyle events.

Brennan Cheney | Danville, Calif. | San Ramon Valley HS | Crow Canyon CC Sharks

Brennan Cheney, the younger brother of Georgia senior Teagan Cheney, swims for San Ramon Valley High School under coach Heather Johnson and for the Crow Canyon Country Club Sharks under coaches Joe Natina and Ethan Hall. Cheney reached the finals in both the 200-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly at the 2019 California CIF Sectional Championships. At the 2019 OAPB Far Western Long Course Championships, he placed second in the 50-meter freestyle and third in the 100-meter freestyle. He has also competed in multiple Speedo Champions Series meets.

Duné Coetzee, the 13th-ranked recruit nationally according to CollegeSwimming.com, swims for TUKS Swimmimg Club under coach Linda de Jager. Coetzee was a three-time South African national champion, winning back-to-back titles in the 200-meter butterfly and a victory in the 400-meter freestyle, along with silver medals in the 100-meter butterfly, 200-meter freestyle, and 400-meter freestyle. At this year’s South African National Short Course Championships, she took first in the 200 butterfly and 400 freestyle in addition to three finals appearances. In international competition, she reached the finals of the 200-meter butterfly at the 2019 FINA World Junior Championships and competed in three events at the 2019 FINA World Championships, finishing 20th in the 200-meter butterfly. She has also represented her country in the 2018 Commonwealth Games and the 2019 U.S. Open.

Angharad Evans swims for West Suffolk Swimming Club under coach Dan Pilbrow. Evans has represented England in multiple international events, including a bronze medal performance in the 50-meter breaststroke at the 2020 French Golden Tour Camille Muffat meet. She reached the finals in both the 50-meter and 100-meter breaststroke at the 2018 LEN European Junior Championships, placing 10th in the 100-meter, in addition to finishing third in the 100-meter at the 2019 British Summer Championships. She currently holds the national 13-year-old age group record for the 50-meter and 100-meter breaststroke events.

Elsa Fretz | Bristol, Ind. | Northridge HS | Irish Aquatics

Elsa Fretz, the top-ranked recruit in the state of Indiana according to CollegeSwimming.com, swam for Northridge High School under coach Kyle Hembree and swims for Irish Aquatics under coach Matt Dorsch. Fretz was the 2019 Indiana state champion in the 50-yard freestyle, in addition to being a five-time finalist at the meet. At the 2019 Indiana Senior State Championships, she won four titles, including the 50, 100, and 200-yard freestyle, as well as the 100-yard butterfly; she was also a four-time winner at the state’s short course and long course championships. In the 50-meter freestyle, she qualified for the 2020 Olympic Trials, along with competing in four events at the 2019 National Championships. She has been named a NISCA All-American and has been named to the USA Swimming Scholastic All-America Team in each of the last three years.
“After going to Athens and meeting with the team and coaches, I realized that the University of Georgia was the perfect place to continue to foster my academic and athletic growth,” said Fretz. “The culture at Georgia is unmatched and I cannot wait for the next four years. Go Dawgs!”

Hailey Galbraith swims for North Forsyth High School under coach Tyler Martin and for Spartans Aquatic Club under coach Karl Krug. Galbraith was a two-time Georgia 6-7A state champion, winning the 50-yard freestyle in each of the past two seasons, in addition to consecutive runner-up finishes in the 100-yard butterfly. She won the 50-yard freestyle title at the 2019 Georgia Senior Short Course Championships and reached the finals in the 50-meter freestyle at the 2019 Long Course Championships. She also competed in three events at the 2019 Speedo Winter Junior Nationals and was a three-time finalist at the 2019 USA Swimming South Sectional Championships. She has been named to the USA Swimming Scholastic All-American Team in each of the last three years.

Lily Gardner, the third-ranked recruit in Oregon per CollegeSwimming.com, swims for Sunset High School under coach Adam Farber and for Tualatin Hills Swim Club under coach Franz Resseguie. Gardner was a five-time Oregon 6A state champion, taking four titles in 2019, including the 100-yard butterfly and state record-setting performances in the 200-yard freestyle, 200-yard freestyle relay, and 400-yard freestyle relay. She finished second in the 100-yard butterfly at the 2020 USA Swimming Western Region Senior Championships and took the 200-meter freestyle at the 2019 USA Swimming Futures Championship. She reached the finals in five events at the 2019 Mel Zajac, Jr. International Swim Meet and competed in four events at the 2019 Speedo Winter Junior Nationals.

Hailey Hicks swims for Sanderson High School under coach Chris Mumma and for YMCA of the Triangle Area under coach Jamie Bloom. Hicks was a six-time finalist at the North Carolina 4A state championships, placing third in the 100-yard freestyle in 2020 and fourth in the 50-yard freestyle in 2019. This past season, she won both regional championships in the 50 and 100-yard freestyle, defending her title in the 50. She also took first in the 50-meter freestyle at the 2019 ISCA TYR Summer Senior Championship and was a three-time finalist at the 2018 North Carolina Long Course Championships. She qualified for three events at the 2019 Speedo Winter Junior Nationals and has competed in TYR Pro Series meets. She has been named to the USA Swimming Scholastic All-American Team in each of the last three years.

Rhett Hopkins | Annapolis, Md. | South River HS | Alexandria Dive Club

Rhett Hopkins competes for Alexandria Dive Club under coach Tim Fisher. Hopkins was a three-time participant at the USA Diving Junior National Championships, finishing 12th on the 3-meter and 13th on the 1-meter at the 2018 event. He reached the finals in both springboard events at the 2019 Zone D Championships, placing sixth on the 3-meter, after previously finishing fifth on the 1-meter at the 2018 Zones. As a member of the 12-13 age group, he reached the USA Diving National Championships in 2015 and 2016, advancing to three semifinals.

Kennedy was a four-time finalist at the Georgia 1-5A state championships, earning a silver medal in the 50-yard freestyle in 2020. She placed fifth in the 50-meter freestyle at the 2019 Georgia Senior State Long Course Championships and finished seventh in the event at the 2020 Speedo Champions Series meet in Cary, North Carolina. She competed in the 50-yard freestyle at the 2019 Speedo Winter Junior Nationals and was named to the USA Swimming Scholastic All-America Team in 2019.

Nolan Lewis competes for Moss Farms Diving under coaches John Fox and Tom Gimm. Lewis finished 12th on the platform at the 2019 USA Diving Junior National Championships after a runner-up finish at Zones and a victory on the 3-meter at Regionals. In 2018, he placed ninth in the 14-15 age group on the 1-meter at Junior Nationals. He was a nine-time finalist at the YMCA National Championships, winning the 14-15 age group title on the platform in 2017. He also swept the springboard events at the 2018 Georgia Games.

Henré Louw swims for TUKS Swimming Club under coach Rocco Meiring. Louw won the national championship in the 800-meter freestyle in 2019 and has been an eight-time finalist in the event. He was the runner-up in the 1,500-meter freestyle at the 2019 South Africa National Aquatic Championship and was a seven-time finalist at the National Junior Championships. He has represented South Africa at the 2019 FINA World Junior Championships, reaching the finals in the 1,500-meter freestyle, along with an appearance at the 2018 World Junior Open Water Championships.

Mary Martin, the second-ranked recruit in Iowa by CollegeSwimming.com, swims for Dowling Catholic High School under coach Paul Eure and for the Greater Des Moines YMCA under coach Allan McCallum. Martin was a three-time Iowa state champion, winning the 100-yard breaststroke and 200-yard medley relay in 2019 and 200-yard IM in 2018. She was also the runner-up in the 100-yard breaststroke in 2018 and a fifth-place finalist in the 200-yard IM in 2019. She swept the breaststroke events at the 2020 Iowa Swimming Senior Championships and finished second in the 100-yard breaststroke at the 2019 Iowa Long Course Championships. In national competition, she reached the finals in the 100-yard breaststroke at the 2018 Speedo Winter Junior Nationals and qualified for three events at the 2019 Speedo Junior Nationals, along with placing fourth in the 100 at the 2019 YMCA Short Course National Championships. She has been named to the USA Swimming Scholastic All-America Team each of the last three years.

Eboni McCarty, the third-ranked recruit in Alabama according to CollegeSwimming.com, swims for Westminster Christian Academy under coach Roger Von Jouanne and for the Madison Swimming Association under coaches Roger and Pam Van Jouanne. McCarty was a five-time Alabama 6-7A state champion, winning three consecutive titles in the 50-yard freestyle and back-to-back golds in the 100-yard freestyle. Along with setting a new state record in the 50 free in 2019, she helped Westminster win its fourth-consecutive state championship. She has won back-to-back titles in the 50-yard backstroke at the Southeastern Swimming Short Course Championships and has reached the finals in seven events at the Southeastern Long Course Championships. She also placed 11th in the 100-yard freestyle at the 2019 Speedo Winter Junior Nationals and competed in the 50-meter freestyle at the 2019 U.S. Open.

Mitchell Norton, the fifth-ranked recruit in Georgia according to CollegeSwimming.com, swims for Mount Paran Christian School under coach Bonnie Roginsky and for the Marietta Marlins under coach Yit Lim. Norton was a four-time Georgia 1-5A state champion, having won three consecutive titles in the 200-yard freestyle and a 100-yard freestyle win in 2020. He was a five-time finalist at both the Georgia Senior State Long Course and Short Course Championships, placing fourth in the 100-yard and 500-yard freestyle in 2018. He earned silver medals in the 50-meter freestyle, 50-meter backstroke, and 100-meter backstroke at the 2019 ISCA TYR Junior Nationals and reached the finals in two events at the 2019 Speedo Winter Junior Nationals. He has been named to the USA Swimming Scholastic All-America Team each of the last three years.

Parker was a nine-time finalist at the Georgia Senior Long Course Championship, finishing fifth in the 100-meter backstroke in 2019, as well as a four-time finalist at the Senior Short Course Championship. He competed in the 100-yard freestyle, 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard backstroke, and 200-yard backstroke at the 2019 Speedo Winter Junior Nationals. He was named to the USA Swimming Scholastic All-America Team in 2019

TJ Pittenger swims for Northgate High School under coach Becky Lowery and for Swim Atlanta under coach Caleb Weir. Pittenger was the 2020 Georgia 6-7A state champion in the 50-yard freestyle and a silver medalist in the 100-yard freestyle, in addition to being a two-time finalist in 2019. He reached the finals in the 50-yard freestyle at the 2019 Speedo Winter Junior Nationals and placed fifth in the same event at the 2020 Southern Premier. At the 2019 Georgia Senior Short Course Championships, he finished seventh in the 200-yard freestyle, and reached three finals at the Senior Long Course Championships. Additionally, he qualified for two events at the 2019 Speedo Winter Junior Nationals and competed in the Knoxville TYR Pro Series meet in 2020. He was named to the USA Swimming Scholastic All-America Team in 2019.

Briana Roberson swims for Churchill Fulshear High School under coach Matthew Tomas and for Katy Aquatics under coach Tim Bauer. Roberson was the runner-up in both the 100 and 200-yard freestyle at the 2020 Texas 5A state championships after defending her regional championships in both events. She was also a fourth-place finalist in the 200 free at the 2019 championship meet. For her club team, she was a two-time finalist at the USA Swimming Southern Zone Senior Championships, placing third in the 100-meter freestyle and fifth in the 50-meter freestyle.

Peter Sacca | Norcross, Ga. | Mother of Divine Grace | Spartans Aquatic Club

Peter Sacca swims for Spartans Aquatic Club under coach Karl Krug. Sacca took first in the 100-yard IM at the 2019 Georgia Senior Short Course Championships while also reaching the finals in the 50-yard freestyle, 50-yard butterfly, and 100-yard butterfly. He reached the finals in the 50-meter freestyle, 50-meter butterfly, and 100-meter butterfly at the 2019 USA Swimming Southern Zone Championships and reached three finals at the Plantation Sectionals in 2020. He also qualified for two events at the 2019 Speedo Winter Junior Nationals.

Millie Sansome | Marlow, England | Wycombe / Iowa | Wycombe District Swimming Club
Events: Freestyle / Backstroke
Millie Sansome, who will begin competing in January, joins the Bulldog program after swimming her freshman season at Iowa. In her lone season with the Hawkeyes, Sansome set four school records in the 100-yard backstroke, 200-yard backstroke, 800-yard freestyle relay, and 400-yard medley relay, while reaching the all-time program top 10 in four additional events. She was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week on two occasions and reached the A final in the 200-yard backstroke at the league championships, all while posting B-cut times in both backstroke events during the season. She was also named to the CSCAA Scholar All-America Second Team. Prior to Iowa, she represented England in multiple international events, placing third in the 200-meter freestyle at the World School Games and setting the 18-year-old national age group record in the 200-meter IM.
“I have been offered an amazing opportunity and I am so excited to announce that I will be transferring to the University of Georgia next semester to start a new chapter in my swimming career,” said Sansome.
Rachel Stege | Naperville, Ill. | Neuqua Valley HS | FMC Aquatics

Rachel Stege, the fifth-ranked recruit nationally according to CollegeSwimming.com, swims for Neuqua Valley High School under coach Jason Niforatos and for FMC Aquatics under coach Dave Krotiak. Stege was a five-time Illinois state champion, setting state records in the 200-yard freestyle, 500-yard freestyle, and 200-yard freestyle relay at the 2019 championships, making her only the second Illinois woman to win four events in a state title meet in route to a team championship. She swam for Team USA at the 2019 FINA World Junior Championships, placing third in the 400-meter freestyle. She also reached the finals in the three events at the 2019 U.S. Open and in two at the 2019 National Championships, along with qualifying for the 2020 Olympic Trials in four events. Additionally, she has competed in TYR Pro Series and Speedo Champions Series meets.

Keegan Streett | Fishers, Ind. | Hamilton Southeastern HS | Southeastern Swim Club

Keegan Streett swims for Hamilton Southeastern High School and Southeastern Swim Club under coach Andy Pedersen. Streett was the runner-up in the 200-yard freestyle and placed fifth in the 100-yard freestyle at the Indiana state championships, having previously won the sectional title in the 100. He finished second in the 200-meter freestyle at the 2019 Indiana Senior Long Course Championships and reached the finals in five events at the 2019 Short Course Championships. He qualified for four events at the 2019 Speedo Winter Junior Nationals and competed in the 100-meter and 200-meter freestyle at the 2019 Junior National Championships. He has also competed in multiple Speedo Champions Series meets and was named to the USA Swimming Scholastic All-America Team in 2020.

Arie Voloschin | Atlanta, Ga. | North Springs HS | Dynamo Swim Club
Events: Breaststroke / Freestyle
Arie Voloschin swam for North Springs High School under coach Thomas Rey and for Dynamo Swim Club under coach Ian Murray. Voloschin won the 2020 Georgia 1-5A state championship in the 100-yard freestyle, having previously reached the finals in the 100 free and 100-yard breaststroke. He finished first in the 100 breast at the 2020 USA Swimming Eastern Classic and placed seventh in the 100-yard IM at the 2018 Georgia Senior State Short Course Championships. He reached the finals in the 100 breast at the 2019 Speedo Winter Junior Nationals and qualified for the 50-meter freestyle and 100-meter breaststroke at the 2019 U.S. Open. He was named to the USA Swimming Scholastic All-America Team in 2019 and 2020.

Ryan Wylie | Athens, Ga. | Oconee County HS | Athens Bulldog Swim Club
Events: Freestyle / Butterfly
Ryan Wylie swims for Oconee County High School under coach Madelyne Osborne and for Athens Bulldog Swim Club under coaches Harvey Humphries, Martin Grodzki, and Adam Sasso. Wylie was a two-time Georgia 1-5A state champion in 2020, taking first in the 200 and 500-yard freestyle, after previously medaling in the events at the 2019 meet. He finished third in the 400-meter freestyle at the 2019 Georgia Senior State Long Course Championships, along with finals appearances in the 200-meter freestyle, 200-meter butterfly, and 400-meter IM. He was also a finalist in the 1,650 freestyle at the 2018 Speedo Winter Junior Nationals, as well as in the 200 and 1,650-yard freestyle at the 2019 Speedo Champions Series meet in Greensboro.
