Following a season-opening sweep of South Carolina last Friday, the University of Georgia swimming and diving team received four weekly Southeastern Conference honors Tuesday afternoon, as announced by the league office in Birmingham.

Redshirt senior Javier Acevedo and sophomore Zoie Hartman were both named SEC Swimmers of the Week, with Hartman sharing the award with Jing Wen Quah of Texas A&M. Senior Zach Allen was named SEC Men’s Diver of the Week and freshman Jake Magahey was named SEC Men’s Freshman of the Week.

This is the fifth weekly honor for Hartman, who was previously named Swimmer of the Week on Nov. 5, 2019 and earned four Freshman of the Week accolades last season. For Acevedo, this is his fourth SEC honor and first for Swimmer of the Week. He was previously named Freshman of the Week three times during the 2016-17 season. Allen was previously named Diver of the Week on Nov. 26, 2019, while this is the first plaudit for Magahey.

In his first collegiate race since March 2019, Acevedo returned to competition for Georgia with an outstanding outing. In the opening 200 medley relay, he led off the Bulldogs with a 21.92 50 backstroke split, helping lead the A relay team to a victorious time of 1:27.96.

In individual competition, Acevedo continued to illustrate his backstroke prowess with a winning time of 47.66, earning a B-cut and besting teammate Bradley Dunham by over a second. In the 100 freestyle, he took his second individual race with a time of 44.33, topping the field by over half a second. In the closing 400 freestyle relay, he swam the anchor leg (44.27) in exhibition action, leading the Bulldogs to the second-fastest time in the event at 3:00.46.

Hartman carried over the momentum from her outstanding first campaign, earning three wins against the Gamecocks. In the 200 medley relay, Hartman’s breaststroke leg helped the Georgia A team take first with a time of 1:39.62. In the 100 breaststroke, she won with a B-cut time of 1:00.45, besting teammate Danielle Della Torre by over half a second.

Hartman then earned another individual victory in the 200 with another B-cut time, posting a mark of 2:12.99 that topped the field by three and a half seconds. Finally, in the 400 freestyle relay, she led off the B team with an opening time of 50.99, helping the exhibition performers notch the second-fastest time of the event.

Allen started the season in strong fashion with a victory on the 1-meter springboard. In the event, he took first with a score of 349.05, qualifying for Zones and placing just five points below his previous career best. Later in the 3-meter, he placed second as an exhibition performer, posting a score of 306.83.

Magahey immediately announced himself as one of the nation’s top freshmen with three individual victories. In his debut race, he topped the 1,000 freestyle with a time of 9:03.55, besting teammate Greg Reed by nearly five seconds and closing in on the all-time top 10 in program history.

Without any break, he won the 200 freestyle in the very next race with a time of 1:37.10, topping the field by seven-tenths of a second. He then closed his trio of wins with a time of 4:26.71 in the 500 freestyle, beating Reed by over two seconds. Finally, he swam the opening leg of the 400 freestyle relay in exhibition competition, notching a 45.70 split on the way to a team time of 3:00.46.
