“It ain’t over ‘til the very healthy, robust, woman sings.” “It’s not over until the clock reads triple zero.” “Don’t count your chickens before they hatch.” “It’s not over ‘til IT’S OVER.” Take your pick on which saying you want to glob onto. According to virtually every news outlet in the South and around the Country, current Alabama defensive coordinator and one time Georgia Bulldog, Kirby Smart is in line to be announced as Mark Richt’s successor as the new head coach of the University of Georgia football program.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Well, no offense to Coach Smart, but we’ve all been down this road before. The coaching carousel can be a fickle ride and some can get dizzy just watching it from the sidelines. It’s “Championship Weekend” in college football and while Kirby and the Alabama Crimson Tide are getting ready to play in the Dome, the Georgia Bulldogs are nowhere to be found…again. So, while Coach Richt’s departure is definitive, until Coach Smart is standing in front of a podium, in Athens, Georgia, shaking Greg McGarity’s hand, wearing a Georgia “G” cap on his head, forgive those who brace for the endless possibilities of “what if”.
[su_spacer size=”40″] By most accounts locally and regionally, the move to bring Smart home is, so far, being well received; but it will bring several “IF/THEN” questions. If Smart is the pick, then who is his defensive coordinator? If Smart is the pick, then who does he bring in to run Georgia’s talented yet anemic offense? If Smart is the pick, then who takes over the strength and conditioning program? If Smart is the pick, then what changes will he make to take Georgia from one level to the next? If Smart is the pick, then can ALL the DawgNation get behind the decision and move forward? There will be discussions and debates about whatever decision is made regarding the University of Georgia’s head coach vacancy. Coach Richt left Georgia in a much better place than which he found it and built a tremendous foundation. If Smart is the pick, then let’s see if he can be the architect that builds Georgia up from here.
