We’re still a ways away until the Dawgs are suiting up and taking the field against the UT Martin Skyhawks in the fall, but Georgia’s annual spring game, G-Day, is just around the corner– week away in fact. As fans are growing evermore eager to get a glimpse of what their team may look like in the fall, Coach Kirby Smart says only half of the guys can really be considered to make up the depth of this 2023 team:

“Our job is to try to accelerate the learning process for the first younger group and continue the learning process– and continue to push– to create depth out of our older half.”

There are a couple of positions in particular that are looking really “green,” according to Smart, outside linebackers being one of them. The most experienced of them is Chaz Chambliss, who is only entering his third year with the team and has yet to start at the position. Georgia has recruited well at that position; injuries are making development hard, though. Injuries to Marvin Jones, Jalon Walker, and Mykel Williams have made it hard to establish depth on the edge, and there’s only so much that the freshman can do.

“The level of intensity and awareness that is required to play winning football– they don’t even understand it,” Smart said on how the younger half of the team is coming along.

The transition to the 2023 Georgia Bulldogs will be harder than last year. Major pillars holding the team up in Stetson Bennett, Chris Smith, and Broderick Jones, are gone, and it’s up to the next guy to step up. There are still plenty of questions to be had about certain positions of this team.

But that’s exactly what the Dawgs are here to do. Georgia doesn’t rebuild, it reloads.
