On Tuesday night’s media press conference in Butts-Mehre Heritage Hall, Georgia outside linebacker Raylen Wilson was very quick to speak against the thought of looking past their upcoming matchup with Tennessee Tech:
“It’s really the same vibe every week. We’re going in there to beat somebody for four quarters. We really don’t look at the team we’re playing. It’s really about us being better than we were last week.”
If you look back on Kirby Smart’s first season as the head coach in 2016, his #9 Bulldogs narrowly escaped disaster in a week 2 matchup with Nicholls State by a score of 26-24. Just this past week, unexpected attention was put on Eugene, Oregon as nearly the 50-point favorite Ducks scored a late touchdown to defeat Idaho 24-14.
With that being said, this new era of Georgia Bulldogs football led by a much more experienced coach in Kirby Smart will not allow this weekend’s game to be close like we saw eight years ago. However, if there’s one thing that he has surely preached to his team it’s that every team on the schedule should be treated with respect. They are be a team with division 1 football talent playing with nothing to lose on the road against the number one team in the country.
Even though Georgia will undoubtedly crush the massive underdogs that the Golden Eagles are, this will be at the very least a great opportunity to get notable freshman such as KJ Bolden, Ellis Robinson IV, and Nate Frazier quality minutes before the 2024 schedule brings on road matchups with Kentucky, Alabama, and Texas over the next few weeks.
