Two early first-half goals by Wake Forest proved to be too much, as the Georgia soccer team fell 4-0 to the Demon Deacons, Sunday at Spry Stadium. The Bulldogs (0-1-1) head on the road again next weekend with visits to Texas Tech and Oklahoma State.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Head coach Billy Lesesne expects his team to bounce back after a tough weekend.
[su_spacer size=”40″] “I think fatigue certainly fed into this after playing in overtime on Friday night,” Lesesne said. “Not getting off to a fast start hurt us. Giving up the second goal off of a set piece kind of put us behind the first twenty minutes or so. We got back into the game, but didn’t capitalize on the critical chances that we had. The second-half we had a chance to go for it and we took some chances, which we paid for on the break. We had a little bit more bite and little more fight out of us the second half. It was a good lesson for us to learn, we learn every time we step out there and we’ll just have to be a little bit tougher.”
[su_spacer size=”40″] The Bulldogs fell behind early on in the 12’ after a little give-and-go action from Wake Forest’s Katie Dry and Maddie Huster. Dry took the final pass and snuck a dart past Georgia goalkeeper Louise Hogrell.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Seven minutes later, a foul on Georgia resulted in a free kick just outside of the box for the Demon Deacons. Wake Forest wasted no time in taking advantage of the situation, with Ally Haran burying a shot into the net after an assist from Sarah Teegarden on the free kick.
[su_spacer size=”40″] The Bulldogs were unable to capitalize on any of their runs in the first-half being whistled for several offsides calls in what would have been positive situations for the team. Wake Forest led the shot-count 9-2 heading into the locker rooms at halftime.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Georgia was unable to find much success in the second half, getting outshot 6-3. In the 59’ Wake Forests’ Kahla Seymour snuck by the Bulldogs defense and floated a shot over goalkeeper Louise Hogrell to extend the lead to 3-0. The final goal of the match came from Wake Forests’ Kendal Robino in the 81’.
[su_spacer size=”40″] The Bulldogs are back on the road next weekend facing two foes from the Big 12 Conference. Georgia is schedule to play in Lubbock, Texas against the No. 15 Texas Tech Red Raiders on Friday Aug. 28 at 8 p.m. ET and then head north to Stillwater, Oklahoma to face Oklahoma State on Sunday Aug. 30 at 2 p.m. ET. Friday’s match vs Texas Tech marks Georgia’s first game this season against a ranked foe.
