The UGA women’s soccer team defeated Charlotte, 1-0, on Friday night at Transamerica Field for the Bulldogs’ first road win of 2017. With the win, Georgia improves to 2-1 on the season and remains perfect in the series, improving to 5-0 all-time against the 49ers.
Freshman Caroline Chipman scored her first collegiate goal, after making her first career start, giving the Bulldogs’ the 1-0 lead in the 55th minute of action. She was able to score off a corner kick from fellow freshman Reagan Glisson.
“It’s great to win on the road,” Georgia head coach Billy Lesesne said. “It’s something that we worked on in the spring because of the construction of our complex. We talked about our mentality and how we have to grind games out sometimes and this was one of those. We were fortunate to get that goal early in the second half and then hold on and battle the rest of the way through. It was a hard fought game and a good win for us on the road.”
“It feels really great to get my first collegiate goal,” Chipman said. “I’m really proud of the way we came together in the second half to get the win.”
The first half was a battle of the defenses with only three total shots on goal. Georgia turned it around offensively and nearly tripled its shot opportunities in the second half.
Overall, Georgia took two fewer shots than Charlotte, but it was the corner kick opportunities that made the difference. The Bulldogs took nine corner kicks to the 49ers’ five.
The 49ers had many chances for the equalizer, most notably in the 80th minute when Virginia Lingo took a shot inside the box, making Georgia goalkeeper Louise Hogrell jump to reach. Hogrell bobbled it on the way down before securing the save and maintaining the 1-0 lead.
