BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Georgia sophomore right-handed pitcher Mary Wilson Avant has been named this week’s Southeastern Conference Pitcher of the Week, the league announced Tuesday.

The honor is the first of the Macon, Georgia native’s career and Georgia’s second SEC Pitcher of the Week this season.

Avant was a perfect 3-0 in the circle last week, allowing just one run in 18 innings of work. She combined for the shutout of USC Upstate then followed with a complete-game shutout of Kentucky in game one Friday, striking out a season-high eight batters. She worked another complete game Sunday against the Wildcats, allowing no walks.

In April, Avant has started eight games, winning seven of those contests. She is 7-1 on the season in 67 and two-thirds innings pitched. She has a season ERA of 0.72 with 60 strikeouts.

Georgia hosts Alabama at Jack Turner Stadium this weekend. The series begins Friday at 6 p.m.
