Georgia softball made a miracle run, just falling short of a trip to the Women’s College World Series. Still, what a heroic run to remember for Team 29! The Bulldogs fell to Florida in game three of the Gainesville super regional 5-2 after taking down the Gators 2-1 in game two to force the rubber match the day prior.
Seniors Lyndi Rae Davis, Dallis Goodnight, Lilli Backes, and Rachel Gibson hang up their cleats as all-time greats in Georgia softball lore. Despite their unfortunate exit, this team exceeded expectations and made it to the super regional after not even hosting their own regional.
Following the SEC Tournament where Georgia was eliminated in the second round, a shallow postseason run seemed inevitable. However, traveling to Durham, North Carolina for the Duke regional, Georgia upset the Blue Devils and advanced to their third straight super regional and 14th in program history. That’s just over 50% super regional qualification in the team’s 29-year history.
Head coach Tony Baldwin wrapped up his fourth year at the helm of Georgia softball with yet another deep postseason run against all odds.
The already stacked SEC added two more softball powerhouses in Texas and Oklahoma. Oklahoma has claimed four straight national titles and the Sooners weren’t looking to slow down in the power-loaded SEC. The top six teams in the nation came from the SEC while five of the eight teams in Oklahoma City are from the SEC as well. It was a tough league slate to say the least.
Despite going 7-16 in the conference, falling out of the top 25 following the regular season, and getting eliminated in the second round of the SEC Tournament, Georgia fought, and they fought hard. All credit is due to an unfathomable amount of determination, great pitching and exceptional production at the plate and on the bases throughout Georgia’s postseason run.
It might not have been the outcome we were all hoping for, but this team is resilient. This is Team 29, and they fought with a chip on their shoulder in a postseason run to remember against all odds.
Thank you to those seniors that contributed a hard fought four years in their Athens tenure. Cheers to looking forward to another successful 2026 softball season come next spring!
