Georgia Lady Bulldog basketball freshman forward Caliya Robinson, who has played an instrumental role in the team’s 11-game win streak and 12-1 start to the 2015-16 season, has been named the SEC Freshman of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday.
The Marietta, Ga., native put together two impressive performances over the past week in wins against Cincinnati and Tennessee Tech. Robinson averaged nearly a double-double in two games with her eight points and nine and a half rebounds per contest.
“I am extremely proud and excited for Caliya and the season she has had so far,” head coach Joni Taylor said. “She is very deserving of this honor, and I look forward to watching her develop even more during her time here at Georgia. When we recruited Caliya, we knew she had the potential to be a special player for our program, and it is great to see her hard work paying off.”
Robinson began the week with a strong effort against Cincinnati, recording 10 rebounds to go with six points. She then followed that performance with 10 points and nine boards against Tennessee Tech on Monday night.
The 6-foot-3 forward has had a solid start to her freshman season in Athens. She currently leads the Lady Bulldogs in blocked shots with 14 and has recorded double-digit point totals in three games so far this season. This week’s honor represents the first for Robinson in her young career and the first for a Lady Bulldog player this season.
Georgia opens SEC play this Sunday with a 5 p.m. ET tip against Texas A&M in College Station, Texas. The contest between the Lady Bulldogs and Aggies will be televised on the SEC Network.
