Georgia Equestrian vs. South Carolina: It’s the Gamecocks by a Nose

[break] The No.5 Georgia equestrian team fell to No. 3 South Carolina Saturday morning at the University of Georgia Equestrian Complex in Bishop, Ga. with a final score of 11-9.  With the loss, Georgia moves to 4-4 on the season and 2-2 in Southeastern Conference competition. With the win, South Carolina improves to 6-2 with a 3-1 mark in SEC action.

[break] [break] “There were some great rides today,” said head coach Meghan Boenig. “South Carolina is obviously a phenomenal team. We made one or two little errors that they capitalized on. We need to learn from today and build on it for tomorrow.”

[break] Georgia started the day with a 3-2 deficit to South Carolina in Equitation Over Fences.  Meg O’Mara rode to an event high 90-78 point victory over Samantha Kraus for the Bulldogs.  Leylan Gleeson followed with a score of 88 against her disqualified opponent Samantha Smith.  South Carolina picked up the final three points of the event.
[break] [break] In Horsemanship, Georgia evened the score with a 3-2 performance over South Carolina. The Gamecocks’ Samantha Chiodo took the first point before Georgia’s Bailey Anderson answered with a 78-75.5 victory over Courtney Allen.  South Carolina picked up their final point of the event before Rachel Kolb defeated Bailey Mierzejewski 76.5-75.  Sara Parr rode to an event high, MVP-earning 79.5 to defeat Kelsey Urban who scored a 76.5.  The score was tied at 5 apiece after Equitation Over Fences and Horsemanship.
[break] [break] To start the second half, Georgia took the first point in Equitation on the Flat with Liza Finsness’ 87-75 victory over Kraus.  The score earned Finsness MVP honors. Katherine Schmidt and Smith of South Carolina picked up points before Georgia gained the final two points of the event. Kylee Arbuckle’s 74-67 victory over Adele Norton and Megan Southam’s 76-73 decision Amber Henter sealed the event for the Bulldogs.

[break] Trailing South Carolina 8-7, Georgia headed into the final event of the day.  South Carolina’s Layla Choate and Paisley Roberts took the first two points in Reining, but Claudia Spreng answered with a 70-67 victory over Bailey Walters.  South Carolina took the final two points of the events, securing their 11-9 win over the Bulldogs.
