Daily Dawg Thread – 18July2019: UGA Offers CB Dontae Manning

The beginning of this week has been a busy one for the UGA football program as Head Coach Kirby Smart and QB Jake Fromm, OT Andrew Thomas, and safety J.R. Reed were representing the Bulldawgs at SEC Media Days on Tuesday, but it didn’t stop the coaching staff from handing out some offers. One of which was to 2020 cornerback Dontae Manning.

Manning recently de-committed from the Oklahoma Sooners on July 6th, and in addition to the offer from Georgia, he has received 23 scholarship offers so far.

The 6-foot-0 and 185 lbs rising senior out of Raytown High School, Kansas City, MO is rated a 4-star prospect by both 247Sports and ESPN, and Rivals has him as a 3-star. Manning is considered a top-10 CB at the position for 2020 by 247 and ESPN, and he is a top-10 player from the state of Missouri.

The Bulldawgs currently have one defensive back committed for the 2020 recruiting class in CB Jalen Kimber but have offered over 43. Of those, 5-star CB Kelee Ringo and 4-star CB Dwight McGlothern are big-time targets for Georgia along with JUCO Nadab Joseph. On the roster, UGA currently has 15 DBs on scholarship. Of those, two are seniors, safeties J.R. Reed and Tyrique McGhee, and there are four juniors, CB DJ Daniel, safety Richard LeCounte III, DB William Poole III, and Mark Webb. Which means that although there is good depth in the secondary for 2019 and 2020, Georgia will lose at least six DBs over the next 2 seasons as those players run out of eligibility, and that is not counting any early departures to the NFL or transfers. Getting 3 or 4 DBs in this 2020 recruiting cycle will help continue to build the depth that Coach Smart and his staff have in place in the defensive backfield.
