TENNIS: UGA Men and Women teams open NCAA play this weekend – Women host at Magil

The University of Georgia men’s and women’s tennis teams have earned spots in the NCAA Tournament, with the women’s team set to host the first and second round matches this weekend at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. The men will travel to Winston-Salem, N.C., for their first and second round matches at the Wake Forest regional. The announcement came Monday evening during the 2024 NCAA Selection Show. 

Georgia’s women’s team, which earned the No. 7 overall seed, welcomes Alabama State, Florida State and UNC Asheville. The action starts at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 3, with Florida State battling Illinois. Georgia’s match will follow as the Bulldogs will host Alabama State at 1 p.m. The winners of those first round matches will play on Saturday for spot in the Super Regionals at 1 p.m.

Men’s action will also begin on Friday, May 3, when the Bulldogs face Arizona State at 2 p.m. ET before Wake Forest — the No. 6 overall seed — will take on South Carolina State at 5 p.m. The potential second round matchup will be played on the following day at 5 p.m.

The Georgia women — which won a share of the 2024 SEC regular season title as well as the SEC tournament title — received a bid to the NCAA Tournament for the 37th-straight year with an all-time tournament record of 93-34. The 2024 season marks the 13th consecutive year the Bulldogs have earned a host position for the first and second rounds of the tournament. The program has won two NCAA titles (1994 and 2000), while a Bulldog has won the NCAA singles championship three times (Lisa Spain in 1984; Angela Lettiere in 1994; Chelsey Gullickson in 2010).

The Bulldog men, who hold a tournament record of 117-40, are making their 40th-straight and 45th overall NCAA appearance. Georgia’s men have won six NCAA National Championships (1985, 1987, 1999, 2001, 2007 and 2008), while a Bulldog has won the NCAA Singles Championship five times (Mikael Pernfors in 1984 and 1985; Matias Boeker in 2001 and 2002; Ethan Quinn in 2023). The Bulldogs have claimed the doubles title on three occasions – Ola Malmqvist and Allen Miller in 1983, Boeker and Travis Parrott in 2001 and John Isner and Antonio Ruiz in 2005.

Tickets for this weekend’s matches go on sale online at Georgia Bulldogs | Online Ticket Office | Event Groups (evenue.net) beginning Monday evening at 8 p.m.  Fans can also purchase tickets at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex beginning one hour prior to the start of the first match each day (based on availability). Will call opens at 9 a.m. Friday, 9 a.m. Saturday and noon on Sunday. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for youth and seniors. The ticket is good for the entire day.

BSB: Georgia travels to Kennesaw State Tuesday with first pitch at 6:02 p.m.

The 18^th-ranked Georgia Bulldogs travel to Kennesaw State Tuesday with first pitch at 6:02 p.m. and streamed on ESPN+. The game will be available on the Georgia Bulldog Sports Network.

The Bulldogs are 31-12 under first-year Ike Cousins head baseball coach Wes Johnson. The Owls are 24-18 and are coached by Ryan Coe who is in his second season. Tuesday’s contest will be the final non-conference game of the regular season for Georgia. The Bulldogs have three more SEC series. Up next in league action, Georgia will play host to No. 13 Vanderbilt starting Friday at Foley Field.

Series History With KSU: Georgia leads the KSU series 23-11 including a 15-5 run-rule win in eight innings in Athens on Apr. 9. The Owls have had some impressive road wins this year. They went 2-1 against No. 8 Kentucky, who is 33-9 now, and 1-2 against now No. 4 Clemson (34-9).

Pitching Matchup: Georgia will start sophomore RHP Zach Harris (3-0, 9.00 ERA), and this will be his 15th appearance of the year including second start as a Bulldog. Last Tuesday, he started and went 2.2 innings against No. 4 Clemson, allowing two runs on three hits with a walk and two strikeouts. He got a no decision as the Bulldogs eventually won 4-3 in 15 innings. Harris earned the win over the Owls earlier this year with a scoreless inning of relief. He went 2-4 with a 7.85 ERA as a freshman at Georgia Southern in 2023. He made 19 appearances including seven starts with the Eagles. KSU will counter with junior RHP Smith Pinson (2-6, 5.30 ERA).

Stay Hot: The Bulldogs rank third nationally with a school record-tying 109 home runs, which matches the 2009 club that set the mark in 62 games. Also of note, this year’s squad has hit a school record 10 grand slams. Georgia is third nationally with a .595 slugging percentage while it is sixth in on base percentage at .436. The Bulldogs are batting .306 with a 5.45 team ERA and .975 fielding percentage. The Owls enters Tuesday batting .289 with 35 home runs, a .426 SLG% and .390 OB%. KSU owns a 5.29 ERA and a .969 FLDG%.

Top Hitters To Watch: The Bulldog offense is headlined by sophomore All-America Charlie Condon. The potential top draft pick in 2024 according to MLB.com, Condon leads the NCAA with a .461 batting average, a school record 29 home runs, 182 total bases and 1.090 SLG%. He has a .567 OB% (third nationally) with 37 walks (17 intentional) and 61 RBI. Senior Corey Collins is enjoying a fine year too at .371-13-40. Collins leads the country with a .586 OB%. Junior Kolby Branch has 13 home runs and 46 RBI while junior Slate Alford is second on the club with 49 RBI.

        Condon has smashed a school record 54 career home runs in only 99 games The old mark belonged to former first round draft pick Gordon Beckham (Chicago White Sox) who hit 53 in 197 games. This season, Condon has had seven games with multiple home runs including one with three home runs (Michigan State).

        The Owls top hitters are Spencer Hanson (.362-5-26), Brayden Eidson (.356-4-36) and the leading home run and RBI producer is Issac Bouton (.317-10-42).

MBB: Dawgs sign Dakota Leffew

Dakota Leffew, a first-team All-MAAC performer for Mount St. Mary’s during the 2023-24 season, has signed a letter of intent to play for the Georgia Bulldogs next season as a graduate transfer, head coach Mike White announced on Monday.

Leffew is a 6-5, 185-pound guard from Hampton, Ga., who played at Jonesboro High School. In 99 games played over four seasons at Mount St. Mary’s, he recorded 1,137 points (11.5 ppg), 324 rebounds (3.3 rpg) and 233 assists (2.4 apg). Among the Mountaineers’ career leaders, Leffew ranks No. 32 in scoring, No. 9 in 3-point attempted (491) and No. 10 in 3-pointers made (176).

Leffew will be using a fifth season of eligibility granted by the NCAA to freshmen who began their college basketball careers during the 2020-21 season. That class is the final group to receive the extra year of eligibility.

After starting two of 38 games played and averaging 5.3 points, 2.9 rebounds and 1.6 assists as a freshman and sophomore, Leffew started all 61 games played at Mount St. Mary’s over the past two seasons. He averaged 13.1 points, 2.7 rebounds and 1.7 assists as a junior before upping those contributions to 17.6 points, 4.3 boards and 3.9 assists during 2023-24. Among Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) statistical leaders, Leffew led the league in playing time (35.4 mpg) last season and also ranked No. 3 in scoring, No. 5 in assists (3.9 apg), No. 9 in steals (1.5 spg), No. 10 in 3-point percentage (.365), No. 10 in free throw percentage (.765) and No. 13 in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.37).

Leffew helped Jonesboro High to a combined 44-18 record during the 2017-18 and 2018-19 seasons. The Cardinals reached the semifinals of the Georgia’s Class 6A state tournament in 2018 before reaching the round of 16 in the Class 5A bracket in 2019. He averaged 14.1 points, 4.8 rebounds and 2.4 assists as a senior. Leffew then spent a postgraduate season at Middle Georgia Prep and averaged 21 points, six rebounds, six assists and two steals per game.

Leffew is the fourth newcomer for Georgia’s 2024-25 roster. Last fall, the Bulldogs signed Asa Newell, a 6-10, 215-pound power forward from Destin, Fla., who was ranked as the No. 8 overall prospect in the 247Sports.com composite ledger for Class of 2024 prep prospects. From the transfer portal, this spring Georgia also has signed De’Shayne Montgomery, a 6-4, 190-pound guard from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., who won 2024 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Rookie of the Year accolades playing for Mount St. Mary’s last season; and Frank Abson, a 6-9, 235-pound forward from Pompano Beach, Fla., who was named the 2024 Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Year after finishing No. 4 nationally in blocked shots last season at Appalachian State.

Southern Company Peach Bowl Challenge pairings announced

The Southern Company Peach Bowl Challenge today announced the official pairings for its 17th annual charity golf tournament. A 12-team field of current and former college football coaches will compete for a share of the $300,000 charity purse April 30 at Reynolds Lake Oconee outside Atlanta.

Pairings were determined by balancing handicaps between teams. The nation’s premier collegiate coach golf event will be played in Two Man Scramble format with Stableford scoring in an 18-hole tournament.

Proceeds from the event benefit charitable foundations selected by the coaches. The first-place duo will split $65,000 between the two winning coaches’ charities, while the remainder of the purse will be divided based on the finish of the other teams.

Since its creation in 2007, the event has contributed a total of $9.3 million in scholarship and charity, helping make the Peach Bowl college football’s most charitable bowl organization.
