WBB: Dawgs fall to Florida 69-78

The Georgia women’s basketball team clawed back from a 22-point deficit to get within four points in the fourth quarter, but fell to the Florida Gators, 78-69, Sunday at Exactech Arena. 

After falling behind 56-34 in the second half, Georgia outscored the Gators 26-17 in the fourth frame to nearly pull off the comeback. The Lady Bulldogs drop to 10-7 overall and 1-3 against Southeastern Conference foes. 

Asia Avinger paced Georgia with 22 points off 6-of-11 shooting and an 8-of-10 mark at the free-throw line. Taniyah Thompson scored in double figures for the second-straight game, while Javyn Nicholson added 14 points. Nicholson’s double-double streak came to and end at nine games — the fourth-longest streak in program history. 

Georgia shot 25 percent in the first quarter and fell behind 19-9 in the early going. The Lady Bulldogs closed the gap to just seven points thanks to a scoring spurt in the second frame, but found themselves down by as many as 18 points at 37-19. 

Avinger knocked in a 3-pointer at the halftime buzzer to close the gap to 38-26. She paced Georgia with nine points in the first half, while Thompson added eight. 

Nicholson scored Georgia’s first eight points in the second half, but Georgia could not stop Florida on the defensive end. The Gators hit six of their first 10 shots and outscored the Lady Bulldogs 16-8 in the first five minutes of the third quarter to take a commanding 54-34 advantage with 4:41 on the clock. 

The fourth quarter was all Georgia, as the Lady Bulldogs outscored the Gators, 26-17. 

WTennis: UGA ends Michigan Invitational with four doubles wins

 After three days of competition, the Georgia women’s tennis team concluded its third day of action with four doubles victories at the Michigan Invitational on Sunday. 

With doubles competition taking place all day, the Bulldogs opened the morning against Ohio State with one win. 

The newly formed tandem of Alexandra Vecic and Mell Reasco opened the win column for Georgia with a victory over Sydni Ratliff and Shelly Bereznyak (Ohio State). Despite the early battle, the Bulldog duo prevailed and closed out the match with three straight games to win 6-3. 

Heading into the afternoon, the Bulldogs took three of four doubles matchups against Michigan to close up action in Ann Arbor. 

The first result saw No. 58 Aysegul Mert and Dasha Vidmanova pull off an upset for a ranked win against No. 8 Kari Miller and Jaedan Brown (Michigan). Early dominance set the tone for the Bulldog duo as they made quick work of the opposition to cruise past for a 6-1 win. 

No. 15 Guillermina Grant and Mai Nirundorn followed with their own dominant performance in a win against Julia Fliegner and Lily Jones (Michigan). Despite dropping one game, Grant and Nirundorn were sharp through seven games as they controlled momentum on their way to their own 6-1 victory.  

Anastasiia Lopata and Haley Gaudette rounded out the wins on the day after knocking off Gala Mesochoritou and Bayley Sheinin (Michigan). The match was a back-and-forth battle early as neither side led by more than two games. Tied at 5-5, Lopata and Gaudette capitalized on momentum as they capped off the last two games and take the match 7-5. 

Georgia will now prepare for its first dual match of the season where it will travel to face No. 1 North Carolina on Sunday, Jan. 21 at 1 p.m. in Chapel Hill, N.C. The two programs are meeting for the first time since competing in the 2023 NCAA Tournament semifinals.
