When asked about the progress of Richard LeCounte by Seth Emerson of DawgNation, Smart made it clear that the sophomore from him Liberty County has all the tools to be great, but…

He is still growing. It’s gonna be a growing process in the secondary. Sometimes I think Richard really wants to be good, but I don’t know if Richard knows what it takes to be good – like the demands it takes, the study habits it takes, the seriousness it takes. He’s a very talented young man, but he’s got to meet the demands that the position requires, which is come-in, learn, make the calls, make the decisions and…sometimes, I don’t know if he wants that responsibility on him.”

Can you say, “Wake up call from the coach?” Smart was later asked if he likes what he sees on the field from LeCounte:

Five minutes, I would say, ‘yeah’ – another five minutes I would say, ‘what the hell.’ It’s up and down…It is not consistent. It’s hard to answer that question because it depends on what five minutes you are referring to.

One thing about Kirby Smart, he is brutally honest when discussing his team. The fact that one was a heralded, five-star recruit does not shield one from a public evaluation.
