You would think that the Georgia QB situation couldn’t be any better with 5 star Jake Fromm and Justin Fields in the fold, but there is one glaring issue.
There are only two quarterbacks on scholarship at Georgia leaving them lacking a little depth. While many would say this isn’t too much of a problem, last year was the perfect example of the next man up.
If Georgia would have stumbled upon horrid luck last season, and Fromm would have fallen to injury like Eason, Brice Ramsey was there as the last safety net.
Unfortunately, Georgia will not have that luxury as the would be third string QB Stetson Bennett elected to transfer this offseason to a JUCO in Mississippi leaving Georgia with no real option behind Justin Fields.
The absence of this safety net for Georgia magnifies the importance of Fields role.
Even with the new redshirt rule (which allows redshirted players to participate in up to 4 games) being implemented this year considerable playing time seems inevitable for Fields. While this is still Fromm’s team, the dilemma has no effect on Smart’s plans and he expects Fields to contribute early and often.
Smart responded to the Fields redshirt question with this, “That’s not in our plans.”
Fields bring an entirely new dimension to Georgia’s offense that they haven’t had in awhile and that is mobile legs which have Smart grinning from ear to ear.
“You want to grow and develop them, but by their fourth year, they’re either ready to leave, they’re graduating, or they’re transferring,” Smart said. “If they can help your team now, you play them now.”
