MEN’S TENNIS: Austin Smith and Ben Wagland Finish 2nd in Final National Ranking

[su_spacer size=”20″] University of Georgia juniors Austin Smith and Ben Wagland came in at No. 2 in the final rankings of the 2014-15 men’s tennis season released Wednesday by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).
[su_spacer size=”40″] Smith and Wagland were 18-4 this season, including a 16-3 record against ranked opponents. The pair had wins against doubles teams ranked Nos. 1, 2, 4, 6, 11 (twice),12 and 16, and they are the seventh Georgia tandem in the last 15 years to finish the year ranked in the top-five nationally. They reached the quarterfinals of the NCAA Doubles Championship as the No. 1 overall seed.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Two other Bulldog doubles teams were also included in the final rankings: Wagland and Paul Oosterbaan were No. 44, while Smith and Eric Diaz came in at No. 62.
[su_spacer size=”40″] In singes, freshman Wayne Montgomery was the highest-ranked Bulldog at No. 26 followed by Austin Smith at No. 27 and Nathan Pasha at No. 37. Montgomery led the team with 32 singles wins, while Smith had a team-best 15 wins against ranked opponents, one ahead of Pasha’s 14.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Georgia had two seniors – Diaz and Pasha – on the 2015 squad that won the SEC title and finished ranked No. 8 nationally with a 24-5 record.
