For the second consecutive week, Wayne Montgomery has been named the SEC Tennis Freshman of the Week, according to an announcement Wednesday by the conference office.
Montgomery helped lead Georgia to the semifinals of the ITA National Team Indoor Championships last week in Chicago. He provided the clincher against fifth-ranked Illinois in the quarterfinals on Saturday. With Georgia leading the Illini 3-2, the two remaining matches were in third set tiebreakers, and Montgomery’s 1-6, 6-3, 7-6(3) win over No. 41 Farris Gosea at No. 1 gave Georgia its second win over a top-five team this season and was also the first career clincher for the South Africa native.[break] [break]
Montgomery also won the first completed doubles matches along with freshman Paul Oosterbaan by identical scores of 6-1 against 15th-ranked Columbia and top-ranked USC. Against the Trojans, Montgomery led seventh-ranked Yannick Hanfmann 4-1 in the third set at No. 1 singles when the Trojans clinched the match.[break] [break]
Montgomery is 22-5 on the season with eight wins against ranked opponents. The third-ranked Bulldogs will be back in action Sunday at 2:30 p.m. against Furman at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
