The UGA women’s golf team posted a 15-over 299 in Monday’s opening round of the Stanford Intercollegiate. The Bulldogs are currently tied with No. 23 Florida State in ninth on the team leaderboard at Poppy Hills Golf Club.

Freshman Paula Neira Garcia paced Georgia in round one with an even-par 71. Gabriela Coello fired a 72, Isabella Skinner shot 77 and Bailey Tardy notched a 78 to round out the Bulldogs’ counting rounds. Stephanie Carras also shot 78 but signed an incorrect scorecard and therefore had her round erased.

“We got two really good rounds from Paula and Gaby on a very difficult golf course,” head coach Josh Brewer said. “The PGA Tour plays here so when you can shot at or around par you’ve done well.”

Neira Garcia covered the front nine at 1-over. She birdied both No. 4 and No. 6 but double-bogeyed No. 5 between. A bogey at No. 9 was followed by eight straight pars before a closing birdie at No. 18 supplied her second par-or-better tally in for rounds this fall.

No. 8 Stanford shot 4-under 280 to grab an eight-shot lead in the team competition. No. 4 UCLA is second at 288, and rounding out the top-10 teams are Washington at 291, San Jose State at 293, UC Davis at 294, Cal at 295, No. 13 Northwestern at 296, Pepperdine at 297 and the Bulldogs and Seminoles at 299.

“Team wise, we just needed a third score,” Brewer said. “With one more score like we got from Paula and Gaby we’d be close to the top of the leaderboard. We’re close. Hopefully, tomorrow we can get there.”

Hannah Kim from Northwestern shot 5-under 66 and leads the individual field by two shots. For Georgia, Neira Garcia is tied for eighth, Coello is tied for 12th, Skinner is tied for 56th and Tardy is tied for 62nd.

The Bulldogs will be paired with Cal Poly and Oregon for Tuesday’s second round. The teams will tee off in waves from 11:00-11:44 from No. 10.Live scoring can be tracked here via golfstat.com.
