[su_spacer size=”20″] An extremely balanced effort by the Georgia women’s golf team resulted in a 2-over 290 in Sunday’s first round of the Cougar Classic. The Bulldogs are tied for fourth, eight shots off the pace of Arkansas at Yeamans Hall Club.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Bailey Tardy led Georgia with a 1-under 71. The Bulldogs’ additional counting tallies came in the form or a trio of 73s, the score signed for by Manuela Carbajo Ré, Jillian Hollis and Rinko Mitsungana. Harang Lee’s 74 was UGA’s drop score.
[su_spacer size=”40″] “I think this was our best round of the year, even though the scores might say differently,” head coach Josh Brewer said. “The course was firm and fast, and it was windy all day. To have all five golfers shoot what did today was very impressive. It gets off to a great start and puts in the position we want to be in. Hopefully, we’ll have another good day tomorrow and put ourselves in a position to win on Tuesday afternoon.”
[su_spacer size=”40″] Tardy’s stead day began with eight pars before consecutive birdies at No. 9 and No. 10. She fell back to even with bogeys at No. 15 and No. 16 but returned to red numbers with a closing birdie at No. 18.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Hollis provided the Bulldogs with their first eagle of the year at the par-5, 523-yard No. 9.
[su_spacer size=”40″] On the individual leaderboard, Tardy is tied for seventh; Carbajo Ré, Hollis and Mitsunaga are all tied for 24th; and Lee is tied for 37th.
[su_spacer size=”40″] “All five of our golfers are competitive, competitive with themselves and competitive with each other,” Brewer said. “It’s very fun to watch. They want their teammates to play well and make birdies, but they want to make their own birdies on top of that so they don’t get beat. If we can continue that mindset, it has the potential to be a special year.”
[su_spacer size=”40″] After teeing off beginning at 11:39 on Sunday, the Bulldogs will open play starting at 8:37 on Monday.
[su_spacer size=”40″] “Everyone said the conditions today were as firm and fast as they’ve ever been here,” Brewer said. “Hopefully, we’ll get some softer greens with earlier tee times tomorrow.”
[su_spacer size=”40″] Georgia will be paired with Wisconsin and Clemson again on Monday. Live scoring is updated on a three-hole basis at www.golfstat.com.
