Ellen Perez, the 12th-ranked singles player in the country, was named SEC Player of the Week by the league office on Wednesday morning.

The Shellharbour, Australia native defeated top-ranked singles player, Joana Eidukonyte of Clemson, 5-7, 7-6, 1-0 on Saturday in Georgia’s 7-0 victory over the No. 20 Tigers. Perez showed great fight in the contest, coming back from down one set to none, 6-5 in games in the second set and 3-0 in the second-set tie break en route to her victory.

It was Georgia’s first win over the No. 1 singles player since Feb. 2, 2015, when Perez’s former doubles partner, Lauren Herring, defeated Virginia’s Julia Elbaba.

Earlier in the match against Clemson, Perez and doubles partner Mariana Gould defeated the Clemson pair of Eidukonyte/Fernanda Navarro by a 6-3 tally. The win for the Georgia duo clinched the doubles point for the Bulldogs, the third time that pair has clinched the doubles point this year.
