The UGA men’s tennis team climbed to number 6 in the latest Oracle ITA team rankings after a strong showing during the weekend of the 2016 MLK Invitational. The Bulldogs were previously ranked 7th, but after they notched 21 overall victories against three ranked teams over the course of the three-day MLK Invitational in Atlanta on Jan. 16-18, they moved up one spot to 6th when the new rankings were announced on Wednesday.

Georgia started off the weekend securing five singles matches and two doubles wins against SEC foe No. 17 Ole Miss. The Bulldogs added another eight victories the following day against No. 42 Georgia Tech, with five singles wins and three doubles triumphs. UGA ended the tournament on a strong note picking up six more wins against No. 2 Oklahoma, this time with four singles and two doubles victories.

UGA sophomore and 20th-ranked singles player Wayne Montgomery was the MLK Singles Champion after he posted a 3-0 record in singles and a 3-0 mark in doubles.

The Bulldogs will play host to one the ITA Kickoff Weekend sites this Saturday and Sunday with No. 37 Louisville, No. 44 Memphis and No. 48 UC Santa Barbara coming to town. The Cardinals and Tigers will face off on Saturday at 9 a.m. followed by Georgia against UC Santa Barbara at 1 p.m. The losers of the two matches will face off on Sunday at 9 a.m. in a consolation round, while the winners will play at 5 p.m. later that day in the championship match.
