WOMEN’S TENNIS: Lady Dogs Run at ITA National Fall Championships Ends

INDIAN WELLS, Calif. – The last contingents for the Georgia women’s tennis team in the Oracle / ITA National Fall Championships fell Friday at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

 

The Bulldogs in action consisted of Katarina Jokic/Mariana Gould and Elena Christofi/Morgan Coppoc in the doubles quarterfinals along with Marta Gonzalez in the second round of the singles consolation bracket.

 

The final Georgia match of the day ended in a second set tiebreaker with the 60th-ranked Duke squad of Kelly Chen and Samantha Harris holding off Elena Christofi and Morgan Coppoc, 6-4, 7-6(4). Christofi and Coppoc, ranked 34th in ITA doubles, are 9-5 during the fall.

 

In a rematch of the ITA regional semifinals, Gould and Jokic lost to the third-ranked duo of Paige Hourigan and Kenya Jones from Georgia Tech, 6-0, 6-4. The match two weeks ago in Athens spilled into a tiebreaker with GT prevailing 8-7(5). The Georgia twosome sit at 12-3 on the fall season.

 

Earlier in the day in the singles consolation draw, the 39th-ranked Petra Granic of Texas moved past Gonzalez, 6-1, 6-1. The No. 105-ranked Gonzalez, of Madrid, Spain, is 16-5 on the year.

 

The Bulldogs polish off the fall season by playing host in the Bulldog Classic, Nov. 10-12 at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
