The Georgia women’s tennis team opened its fall tournament season Friday by winning eight of 10 matches at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.

Four Bulldog freshmen made their debut with Morgan Coppoc and Annette Goulak winning in singles and doubles. Also, sophomore Elena Christofi won both of her matches. Christofi is ranked No. 10 nationally in singles and 34th in doubles with Coppoc. Goulak said she was excited to win her first pair of matches as a Bulldog.

“In college, tennis is not an individual sport, you’re a part of something bigger,” said Goulak. “It was a different atmosphere. It’s great to hear the cheering from the fans and my teammates. My match got very close at the end, and to hear my teammates clapping for me, I was able to remain calm. I’m part of a team now, and I want to win for the team.”

Due to hurricanes that have impacted the Caribbean, Georgia is now playing host to the Puerto Rico Fall Classic. The three-day round-robin event features singles and doubles action with student-athletes from Clemson, Missouri, Vanderbilt and the host Bulldogs.

Georgia coach Jeff Wallace said he was pleased with the results from day one of the tournament.

“For the most part, I thought we did a good job today, and at times, we looked like we had some young players out there and we did,” said Wallace. “It was our first day, and we have a lot to learn, and we will grow as a team.”

Saturday’s action will feature two sessions, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Georgia’s entries will be playing doubles at 10 a.m. and then singles at 11 a.m. followed by more singles at 2 p.m. On Sunday, play begins at 10 a.m. Admission is free throughout the event.
