The No. 3 Georgia women’s tennis team defeated No. 22 Georgia Tech 4-1 on Thursday afternoon at the Ken Byers Tennis Complex in Atlanta, Ga. The Bulldogs improve to 3-0 on the season.
In doubles, on court three, junior Morgan Coppoc and SEC Freshman of the Week Lea Ma made quick work of Monika Dedaj and Sophia Sassoli defeating the duo 6-1. Katarina Jokic and Anna Hertel continued their strong start to the season defeating No. 51 Kenya Jones and Victoria Flores on court one, 6-3. The senior duo of Marta Gonzalez and Elena Christofi went unfinished on court two after Georgia picked up their third straight doubles point of the season.
In singles, on court six, sophomore No. 56 Meg Kowalski breezed through her sets defeating Nadia Gizdova 6-1, 6-0. No. 19 Ma furthered the Georgia lead after defeating No. 73 Gia Cohen 6-3, 6-4 after trailing 3-1 in the second set. Hertel stepped up huge for the Dawgs fighting back after dropping the second set, ultimately clinching the victory for Georgia 6-2, 1-6, 6-4. Jokic climbed back to tie it up at one set apiece on court one against No. 53 Kenya Jones and went unfinished up 4-1 in the third set. Chirstofi also went unfinished on court five tied 4-4 in the second set.
The Bulldogs are back in action as they host Clemson on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 4 p.m. at the Lindsey Hopkins Indoor Courts before beginning preparations for the ITA National Indoor Tournament from Feb. 7-10. Seeding and a bracket will be released at a later date.
