8: Overtimes
Friday felt like a fever dream. The back-and-forth just couldn’t stop. Every time Georgia successfully converted the 2-point attempt, or failed to do so, it felt like the game was over. This historic Friday night game in Athens marked the longest game in Georgia football history. In addition, this rivalry game was the second longest game in college football history, by means of number of overtimes. After a 27-27 score at the end of regulation, the Dawgs had all the momentum. At a certain point, it felt like neither team had momentum and that the outcome would be the result of whoever would mess up first.
1: forced fumble by Dan Jackson
“Dirty Dan” Jackson forced a Haynes King fumble on third and one to give the ball back to the Dawgs’ offense, leading to a game-tying touchdown moments later. He stuffed King on a 3rd and 1 and forced the fumble while doing so. Chaz Chambliss was one of the few players to see the ball and jumped on it without hesitation. If it weren’t for this play from Jackson, the Jackets would have had the opportunity to go for it and run the clock out with a successful fourth down conversion. Or, they would have been able to pin Georgia deep with a punt. This may have been the biggest play of the game, and it was one to remember for Jackson’s final collegiate game against the Jackets.
5: passing touchdowns by Carson Beck
The Bulldogs’ quarterback had yet another amazing game, throwing five touchdown passes. This was his highest total since he threw five touchdowns back in September against Tennessee Tech. He has now thrown for 11 straight touchdowns without an interception. While Beck has had his struggles at times, he has come into great form at the right time.
27: second half points by the Dawgs’ offense
While the offense had absolutely nothing going in the first half, Bobo and his staff made amazing adjustments to find ways to put points on the board late. What’s interesting is it felt like the offense was clicking in the first half. Receivers simply could not come down with the ball at the time. However, when it came down to the wire, big plays were made. Beck connected with Dominic Lovett for the two final touchdowns of regulation. The Bulldogs ended up scoring touchdowns on four out of their five possessions in the second half.
7: Straight wins against Georgia Tech
With this wild win, the Dawgs have now defeated the Jackets for the seventh straight time. While Georgia Tech’s program has certainly been more competitive in recent years, rivalry games are the hardest to win. Smart is now 7-1 against the in-state rival during his time as head coach of his alma mater. Coach Brent Key’s team will have to wait another year to try and knock off their most hated opponent.
