Stats That Matter: Georgia vs. Mississippi State 2024

31 – Points Scored by Mississippi State

Georgia’s defense allowed 31 points to the Mississippi State offense, a team that ranks toward the bottom of the Southeastern Conference in points per game. State’s freshman quarterback Michael Van Buren, Jr. averaged 8.3 yards per attempt with 306 passing yards. Leading up to the Texas game, Georgia defensive coordinator Glenn Schumann will need to collaborate with Smart and Co. on limiting the explosive plays that led to scoring opportunities for Mississippi State. If not, the Longhorns will certainly be looking for the big plays down field with their many weapons.

1 – Punt by Brett Thorson

While the Dawgs have had better days on defense, the offense had a very successful outing, tallying 605 total yards and 41 points. As a result, Georgia punter Brett Thorson only had to see the field once. Since week two’s matchup Tennessee Tech, that is the least we have seen Thorson. This was a great sign for Bulldog Nation to see that Bobo’s group seems to be putting all the pieces together as we move into late October. As the playbook continues to open up, execution will be the most important aspect on both sides of the ball going forward.

459 – Passing Yards by Carson Beck

Georgia quarterback Carson Beck threw for a career-high 459 passing yards, along with three touchdowns. While he still threw two interceptions, the noteworthy performance from the Bulldogs’ signal-caller is a strong boost in momentum as the team prepares for No. 1 Texas. It was exciting to see Beck connect with a few deep passes as well as command an efficient offensive group as a whole. During this past game, Beck had 12 completions that went for 15 or more yards. In addition, he is now a member of a special group. In the last 20 seasons, quarterbacks with 450 passing yards (on 75% completion) include Bryce Young, Matt Corral, Joe Burrow, Dak Prescott, and Johnny Manziel.

1 – Interception from KJ Bolden

True freshman and former five-star KJ Bolden continues to make a name for himself. Late in the second quarter, Michael Van Buren, Jr. threw up a bit of a prayer towards the Mississippi State sideline. Bolden was able to track it down through the air for his first collegiate interception. Bolden and the safety room have been a bright spot among Georgia’s defense. Every game shows how much the Dawgs needed to keep the No. 1 safety in this state, and last December, Kirby Smart made it happen.

134 – Receiving yards for Arian Smith

The senior wide receiver was another Bulldog with a career-high total. The most eye-opening part about Smith’s 134 yards receiving was that it was on just five receptions. It seems as though Bobo and Smart are finding ways to be more explosive, a trait that Bulldog fans have been waiting to see all year. If Smith can minimize drops, the connection between him and Beck can continue to boom. As the current leader of the Georgia receiving core, Smith has 412 yards on the season.
