The Georgia swimming and diving teams hosted the Bulldog Invitational at Gabrielsen Natatorium on Saturday, with several competitors improving their stock regarding the upcoming NCAA Championships.
“We had some really good swims today,” Georgia head coach Jack Bauerle said. “We may have solved a puzzle for our women’s 200 freestyle relay, as well. Emily Cameron gave us a piece to the puzzle. Matias Koskiswam really well, but the two big things were Powell Brooks and James Guest in their time trials. We have stayed ready for NCAAs.”
With four automatic standards under her belt already, Hali Flickinger added a fifth provisional cut to her resume as she stopped the clock in 4:08.49 in the 400 individual medley. Brittany MacLean, who has three A cuts, added a B cut in the 400 individual medley with a time of 4:18.54. Megan Kingsley, who has an A cut in the 200 butterfly, improved her provisional cut in the 100 butterfly to 52.47 and added a B cut of 54.41 in the 100 backstroke.
Caitlin Casazza secured a B cut in the 200 individual medley in 2:00.69. Emily Cameron picked up a B cut in the 100 butterfly with a time of 54.25. Meaghan Raab added a B cut of 1:01.39 in the 100 breaststroke. Anna Kolanowski went 1:47.17 in the 200 freestyle to lower her B-cut time.
Natalie Wallace earned a Zone B Championship qualification on women’s platform, posting a score of 260.65.
Jay Litherland, who is already qualified in the 400 individual medley, picked up a provisional cut in the 500 freestyle as he touched in 4:20.76. Automatically qualified in two events, Gunnar Bentz improved his B cut to 46.57 in the 100 butterfly and added one of 54.96 in the 100 breaststroke. Pace Clark, already qualified in the 200 butterfly, picked up provisional cuts of 1:46.49 in the 200 individual medley and 1:35.29 in the 200 freestyle.
Aidan Burns improved his provisional cut to 4:18.38 in the 500 freestyle. Aidan Sweeney went 3:50.85 in the 400 individual medley to garner a B cut. Blake Atmore secured a provisional time of 47.75 in the 100 backstroke. James Guest improved his B cut to 1:54.64 in the 200 breaststroke. Powell Brooksposted a 1:42.90 in the 200 butterfly, also improving upon his B cut.
The NCAA Championships for the women will take place March 16-19 and the men will compete March 23-26. Each championship will be held at Georgia Tech.
The Lady Bulldogs already have four women with NCAA automatic qualifying standards (A cuts): Flickinger, Kingsley, MacLean and Olivia Smoliga. Another 12 Lady Bulldogs have at least one NCAA provisional qualifying time (B cuts).
On the men’s side, Bentz, Clark, Taylor Dale, Matias Koski and Litherland already have their A cuts. Fourteen additional Bulldogs boast at least one B cut heading into the weekend.
Swimmers with B cuts can advance to the NCAAs if an event does not have a full allotment of A cuts.
In diving, Olivia Ball, Madison Duvall, Allison Greene, Kelly Thatcher, Crawford Berry, Ian Forlini,Spencer Madanay and Walker Wheeler have Zone qualifying scores already. They will compete March 7-9 in the Zone B Championships at Georgia Tech in an attempt to advance to the NCAAs.
Georgia can bring a maximum of 18 swimmers or 17 swimmers and one or two divers to the NCAAs. A swimmer at the NCAAs may enter a maximum of three individual events and compete on up to four relays. A diver may compete on the board(s) he/she qualifies on at Zones.
Both Georgia teams are coming off third-place showings at the Southeastern Conference Championships in Columbia, Mo. The recap of the men’s championship will air on Wednesday at 4 p.m. on ESPNU, followed by the women’s recap at 5:30 p.m.
The meet will conclude on Sunday. The prelims will begin at 10 a.m., with finals set for 4 p.m. There is no charge for admission.
