Oscar Alan Gentry III, a former swimming coach at the University of Georgia from 1968-1970, passed away over the weekend on Saturday, June 3rd after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

 
Gentry was born in Eastman, Georgia on May 18, 1934. After graduating from Fulton High School in Knoxville, TN he went on to earn his Bachelor’s Degree from Wofford College in Spartanburg, SC and then a Master’s Degree from the University of North Carolina. As a collegiate swimmer, he was the Southeastern Champion 100m, and 200m backstroke and Gentry also held the American record in the butterfly. For his accomplishments, Gentry was inducted into the Hall of Fame of Swimming in Knoxville, TN. In addition to being a swim coach at UGA from ’68-’70, Gentry also coached the University of South Carolina’s swim team from 1971-1977. He is survived by his wife, Joyce, four children, and eight grandchildren.
