Former Georgia swimmer Melanie Margalis came in fourth in the women’s 200-meter individual medley on Monday at the 17th FINA World Championships at Danube Arena.

 
Margalis, who competed for the Lady Bulldogs from 2011-14, posted a time of 2:09.82. Katinka Hosszu of Hungary placed first in 2:07.00, followed by Japan’s Yui Ohashi in 2:07.91 and fellow American Madisyn Cox in 2:09.71.
 
 
American Olivia Smoliga qualified for Tuesday’s final in the women’s 100-meter backstroke with a fourth-place effort of 59.07 in the semifinals. During the preliminaries earlier on Monday, Smoliga – who completed her Georgia career in March – reached the wall in 59.70.
 
 
In the men’s 100-meter backstroke, rising sophomore Javier Acevedo of Canada touched in 54.11 to come in 14th. He went 54.43 during the prelims.
 
 
The swimming portion of the 17th FINA World Championships will continue on Tuesday and will conclude on Sunday.
