Georgia’s Taylor Dale swam to a gold medal on the U.S. men’s 400-meter relay team at the World University Games at the Taiwan Sport University Arena on Sunday, and he was not alone. Veronica Burchill, a rising sophomore on UGA’s women’s swimming and diving team, also earned a medal.

 
Dale, who completed his collegiate eligibility in March, swam in prelims and anchored the Americans in 49.58 as they qualified second in 3:17.08. In the finals, the Americans went 3:14.01 to top Italy’s 3:15.24 and Russia’s 3:15.78.

The United States women placed third with a time of 3:40.09. Burchill anchored the Americans’ bronze relay and closed in 54.19. Canada won in 3:39.21, followed by Russia at 3:39.39.
 
 
Also Sunday, in the men’s 100-meter backstroke semifinals, Dale placed second with a time of 54.10 to qualify for Monday’s finals.
