Coming off his insane freshman campaign, sophomore tight end Brock Bowers was permitted to speak in a post-practice interview for the first time in his college career. At this point, he needs almost no introduction. Still, in his short time at UGA, he’s already broken the school’s single-season receiving touchdown record and earned preseason All-American recognitions at his position. Finishing up fall camp he was able to talk about his freshman season and how he feels entering this new one with the hype surrounding him and his fellow tight ends.
Bowers was asked if he knew he’d have the freshman year he was going to have while he was going through fall camp last year. He responded humbly, saying, “Not really. I was just out there doing my thing.” Nothing too crazy about that answer, but later on, Bowers explained that he started getting his head in the game during Week 2, “The UAB game. I think I really started to settle in, and I started to slow down a little bit.” If you saw the game, you could tell he was starting “to settle in” catching 3 passes for over 100 yards and 2 touchdowns. You could say UAB was Bowers’ breakout game, and it seems that he would agree.
Having the season, he did without even expecting it must put some pressure on the young second-year player. He was asked about how he’s dealing with this pressure and how he feels going into this new season given his newly acquired accolades. Bowers didn’t have much to say, telling reporters that he was just “going out there and working as hard as” he can.
With the hype surrounding the entire tight end room, you can begin to understand just why Bowers isn’t taking all the weight on his shoulders. In a room knee-deep in athleticism, a guy like Bowers doesn’t have to be the star. Darnell Washington, Arik Gilbert, and Oscar Delp are some names you’ll hear more of. And while they’re all competing for the same snaps, as a group, they’ve been supportive of each other according to Brock, “We’re all rootin’ for each other.”
From the looks of it Brock Bowers appears to be primed and ready for another solid season at the University of Georgia. Whether or not he repeats his production from last year will depend on various factors. One thing is certain is that Bowers will be a PROBLEM for opposing defenses this season.
