Terry Godwin is entering his third year at the University of Georgia, and the wide receiver out of Hogansville, GA looks to rebound for his junior season after a tough sophomore campaign.
Godwin was a class of 2015 signee out of Callaway High School and saw action as a true freshman in all of Georgia’s 13 games that season. He repped the ‘G’ well off the field and on the field, nabbing 35 receptions for 379 yards and a couple of touchdowns. Last year, after Mitchell graduated and was drafted by the New England Patriots, Godwin looked poised to be the Bulldogs main receiver. And for whatever reason, that just did not happen. Godwin had a solid year, pulling down 38 receptions for 397 yards but the end zone alluded the sophomore.
Now, as the 2017 season is just around the corner and the Bulldogs are wrapping up Fall Camp, Terry Godwin has kept his head down this off season, brought his ‘lunch pail’ to work in practice and in the film and weight rooms. That work and effort have not gone unseen by his teammates or coaches, and Head Coach Kirby Smart complimented Godwin last week after Georgia’s second scrimmage.
“I tell you, when you go to practice, Terry Godwin, he’s like night and day to me to watch that kid,” said Kirby Smart. “I was very honest last year about Terry playing tougher, playing bigger. The guy is blocking hard. He’s competing. He’s taking more reps. He’s such a better leader. I mean to see him grow up means the world to me, because I’ve seen that kid since his ninth grade year.”
Smart’s comments and compliments on Terry Godwin are around the 10:00-minute mark in the video from the August 15th post-practice press conference.
But Godwin is humble when asked about his Head Coache’s comments, saying his focus is on continuing to develop as a player.
“To be honest, I haven’t heard any of it, but a lot of people have been telling me about it,” Godwin said. “You’ve just got to keep pushing and keep doing what you’re doing. It really doesn’t affect me because it’s just like a ‘good job’ or a tap on the butt to me. I just know I’m out there doing my best and doing what I can do to help the team.”
