After Wednesday’s practice, sophomore offensive lineman Cade Mays talks about moving forward from Saturday’s loss to South Carolina and onward to the next opponent, Kentucky.

“The best thing about college football is this Saturday we get another opportunity. We are learning from our mistakes,” said Mays. “We obviously did not execute the way we needed to. This Saturday we are going to do that.”

In response to Kirby stating that the offensive line has to prove that they are one of the best in the country, Cade said that “it’s definitely something we’ve got to do.”

He added, “We are looked at one of the best, if not the best groups in the entire country. We just have to go out and prove that every Saturday. If we don’t everyone who is saying that does not matter.”

Has there been an attitude change since Saturday for this week?

“It definitely woke us up and let us know that we’ve got to perform better,” Mays said.

Mays shared his assessment on how the offensive line performed versus South Carolina in the loss.

“We just didn’t execute the way we needed to. Four guys would have a great play on one play, one guy wouldn’t. That’s the way football goes,” Mays said. “ But you’ve got to have all five guys on the same page; all 11 guys, really. It takes all 11.”

What are some of the team goals for the offensive line game to game?

“What comes to mind for me is third down. Third down, red zone, we’ve got to have high percentages in those categories, goal line and stuff like that” Mays said. “If we have high percentages, it means we’re executing at a high level.”

How difficult is it for you to rotate do different positions along the offensive line due to injuries to other players?

“I’ve been working every place as I always do. I’ve been rotating back and forth but it’s not very difficult,” said Mays. “In that game I was one play at right guard, the next play at left guard. You just go with the ebbs and flows of the game.”
