The Five: Georgia vs. Florida 2024

1. Contain Big Play DJ – Florida’s true freshman quarterback has energized the Gators. One of the most highly touted recruits in the country, Lagway is considered by the Florida faithful to be the engineer of Florida’s turnaround. Here is the key for Georgia, make him uncomfortable. The big problem with mobile quarterbacks is losing containment on the edge and over-rushing the passer, allowing him to step up and run for first down yardage. He can run and has the big arm. Lagway was seven of 14 for 259 yards with a touchdown and no interceptions in the Gators 48-20 blowout win over Kentucky last time out. He also ran for 46 yards on 10 attempts. Jalon Walker, one of the country’s best players, set the tone in Georgia’s 30-15 victory at Texas. He showed great discipline, and went on to have the game of his life. Getting Mykell Williams back was enormous. Florida is trending up. The Georgia defensive front must establish control over the Gators offensive line early.

2. Turnovers – Hot take here. Georgia needs to win the turnover battle to win the game in Jacksonville. They have been a problem. At Alabama, Georgia turned the ball over four times. The Bulldogs threw three interceptions at Texas, but prevailed. As we have touched on throughout this issue, it’s a different feel in Jacksonville. Those momentum flips are sudden. Georgia dropped a slew of passes in Austin. Combined with the three interceptions, the Bulldogs, there was a disconnect too many times in the passing game. Georgia needs to be crisp and efficient. The Georgia stop unit got a great push in Austin, and came up with four turnovers, plus a slew of sacks and tackles for loss. Win that turnover battle Bulldogs, and that would take Georgia a long way towards victory.

3. Kicking Game – The winds of Jacksonville swirl and howl. Coming off the mighty and majestic St. Johns river, those stiff breezes have wreaked havoc on many a Georgia kicker. Peyton Woodring and Brett Thorsen have been tremendous weapons for the Bulldogs this season. Florida has a rich history of outstanding kickers and punters as well. A losing formula is breaking down in the red zone, missing out of the touchdown, and then missing the short field goal. This is one of Georgia’s biggest strengths, and it is essential to win the battle of the kicking game to extend the Bulldogs win streak in Jacksonville to four games.

4. Run the Ball Dawgs – The team that runs that football the best usually wins this game. Some of the most famous ball-toters in Bulldog lore have shined on the big stage of Jacksonville. Trevor Ettienne will be a focal point. He had his best game as a Bulldog in Georgia’s electric victory at Texas. Naturally there is a twist. Ettienne is a transfer from Florida.

5. My First One as a College Student – Here is a story I’ve shared through the years. My first Georgia-Florida game as a college student came in 1991. Along with my friends Jay and Ty, we went to the Jacksonville Landing. Much like Frank Costanza’s Billiards Room, it was “the place to be.” Well it was wall-to-wall and shoulder-to-shoulder. The fans of both teams were barking and chomping. There was some sort of exchange between Georgia fans on the first floor of the Landing, and Florida fans up top. A super classy Florida fan decided to dump his pitcher of beer on some Georgia fans below. And then chomp, saying “come on up.” It would have taken 45 minutes to walk the required distance to deliver retribution. So a couple of Georgia fans just sat there doused. We left. The next day, Steve Spurrier’s Gators pounded the Red and Black 45-13.
