As we now look towards February, we enter one of the best times to be in Athens cheering on the Dawgs. Whether it’s in Stegman Coliseum cheering on the Lady and Hoop Dawgs, or spectating a tennis match at Dan Magill Tennis Complex, there’s always plenty of buzz around Athens even when we aren’t filling Sanford Stadium up on the weekends. Here’s a list of athletic events going on this weekend here in the Classic City and beyond.
Women’s Basketball
The Lady Dawgs (10-10, 1-6 SEC) are in Athens this weekend with matchups on Thursday with the Lady Volunteers (12-7, 5-2 SEC), and on Sunday against Kentucky (9-12, 2-5 SEC). Coach Katie Abrahamson-Henderson’s team has been reeling, losing their last six games. With the SEC Tournament looming in just over a month, the Lady Dawgs need to take advantage of these two games at home to try and build some momentum before then. Thursday’s game will start at 7 pm on SEC Network, and Sunday’s game will start at noon on SEC Network.
Men’s Basketball
The Hoop Dawgs (14-7, 4-4 SEC) are back in action this Saturday for a home matchup with the South Carolina Gamecocks (18-3, 6-2 SEC). The Bulldogs have been struggling as of late, losing three of their four. Wednesday night’s matchup with #24 Alabama was a heartbreaker for the Georgia faithful, losing 76-85 after leading by 14 at the half. If Mike White’s Bulldogs want to have any shot of making the NCAA Tournament, they will have to find a way to stop a Gamecock team that is coming in hot after knocking off #5 Tennessee on the road this Tuesday. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 pm on SEC Network.
Gym Dogs
The #21 GymDogs are scheduled to battle the #8 Florida Gators on Friday night in Stegman Coliseum. The GymDogs have had a rocky start to the season, currently sitting at 1-3 and 0-3 in the conference. Hopes remain high for these ladies, and they’ll have the perfect opportunity to knock off their rivals at home and turn the young season around. The meet is scheduled to start at 6:45 pm on SEC Network.
Dawgs in the NFL: Pro Bowl Games
Four former Bulldogs were selected to the 2024 Pro Bowl Games in Orlando: Eagles RB D’Andre Swift (1st appearance), Bills RB James Cook (1st appearance), Ravens LB Roquan Smith (2nd appearance), and Rams QB Matthew Stafford (3rd appearance). These men will not only represent their current teams, but also the red and black as they participate in Thursday’s Skills Showdown (7 pm on ESPN), and Sunday’s Pro Bowl Games Championship (3 pm on ESPN/ABC). Congratulations to these Dawgs on a great season!
Women’s Tennis
Georgia’s #4 women’s tennis team travels to Austin, TX for a matchup with the #10 Texas Longhorns. The Bulldogs have started the season off strong at 2-1, and will look to continue their early success this Sunday. The match is scheduled to start at 10 am.
Dawgs on Tour: AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am
This weekend on the PGA Tour, seven Bulldogs will be teeing it up this weekend at the iconic Pebble Beach Pro-Am. The seven Dawgs and their Thursday tee times (EST) are as follows:
11:57 am: Russel Henley and Brendon Todd
12:09 pm: Chris Kirk and Brian Harman
12:21 pm: Sepp Straka (paired with Lee Hodges)
1:09 pm: Harris English (paired with Patrick Rodgers)
1:21 pm: Keith Mitchell (paired with Keegan Bradley)
Coverage will be on Golf Channel on Thursday and Friday from 3-7 pm, and 1-3 pm on Saturday. CBS will cover Saturday’s action from 3-7 pm and 3-6:30 pm on Sunday. Good luck to these gentleman!
I appreciate your website, however I think you might check the spelling of a few of your postings. Even though I find it quite difficult to tell the truth because so many of them have spelling errors, I will most certainly return.
My brother was absolutely right when he suggested that I would like this website. You have no idea how much time I spent looking for this information, but this post made my day.
This piece resonates with me on so many levels. Well done!
