From the hardwood to the diamond to the floor, vault, beam and bars, all the way to the fairway and beyond, the Dawgs are always in action. Each weekend, this BI team will bring you a preview for the weekend ahead in all Georgia sports.
Dawgs in the Super Bowl
On Sunday, the Dawgs will have five total players in Super Bowl LVIII. For Kansas City, it will be Mecole Hardman (WR) and Malik Herring (DE) representing the red and black. For San Francisco, the former Dawgs are Robert Beal Jr. (OLB), Chris Conley (WR) and Charlie Woerner (TE). Robert Beal Jr. will have the chance to go back-to-back-to-back in championships if the 49ers secure the win! Good luck to all the former Dawgs as they fight for a chance to hoist the coveted Lombardi Trophy!
Men’s Basketball
The Dawgs are traveling to Fayetteville, AR to face the Razorbacks at 6 P.M. on Saturday, the 10th. The Dawgs rank 10th in the SEC with a 14-9 overall record and 4-6 record in league play. Georgia lost in a road battle with Mississippi St. on Wednesday night while Noah Thomasson had a huge performance, racking up 20 points and on 55% shooting from the three. Prior to the Mississippi St. road game, Georgia faced the South Carolina Gamecocks at home last Saturday. It was a close game, and the Dawgs led at half. However, the Gamecocks offense was too much for undersized Georgia, and pulled away late in the second half. Senior guard Jabri Abdur-Rahim had 20 points in the loss. Mike White and the Dawgs have been in a recent slump, but can they secure a much needed road win?
Arkansas, on the other hand, is coming off a loss at LSU. Junior guard Tramon Mark is averaging 17.8 points per game, leading all Hogs. Arkansas is right below UGA in SEC play, ranking 12th in the conference, with a record of 2-7. While it seems that there’s not much hope for either team in the postseason, both teams are looking for a win at the moment.
Lady Dogs
The Lady Dogs are in the Steg against Vanderbilt Commodores on Sunday, the 11th. The Lady Dogs beat the Kentucky Wildcats last Sunday at home. Javyn Nicholson led the way with an impressive outing, scoring 23 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. The Lady Dawgs are hoping to start a streak at the Steg this Sunday against the beatable Commodores.
Vanderbilt is 8th in SEC with a 4-5 conference record. The Commodores are 0-4 in their last four games, but all four were against SEC opponents ranked above them. This fierce bunch is looking for a win after getting trounced the past couple weeks. However, the Steg is a tough place to grab a win, and Vandy won’t be getting out of there without a fight.
Dawgs on Tour
Six Dawgs on Tour will be competing in this weekend’s Waste Management Phoenix Open. The beautiful TPC Scottsdale Stadium Course in Phoenix plays host to the tournament with a $8.8 million purse on the line. Greyson Sigg, Harris English, Keith Mitchell, Brian Harman, Brendon Todd and Davis Thompson are the Georgia alum fighting for a win in the 2024 PGA Tour season. CBS Sports analyst See Nejad has Brian Harman as the highest favored Dawg with +5500 odds. Good luck to the Dawgs on Tour!
GymDogs
The No. 19 GymDogs are in the Steg for a primetime matchup with the third ranked LSU Tigers. Courtney Kupets Carter’s squad is 1-3 on the year with their lone victory coming in the season opener over NC State 196.200-194.225. Georgia has since been on a three-meet skid, falling to No. 4 Arkansas, No. 9 Missouri, No. 5 Kentucky, and No. 6 Florida. LSU, however, is 5-2 on the year and 2-1 in the SEC. Most recently, the Tigers beat No. 7 Arkansas 198.475-196.200 last Friday. The GymDogs are going to have to perform well if they want to get their second and best win of the year!
Men’s Tennis
The Georgia tennis team has a road trip this weekend going to No. 6 Virginia on Friday and No. 25 UNC on Sunday. Head Coach Manny Diaz and his squad go on the road off of a 5-2 win to Georgia Tech on Tuesday. The Dawgs were down 0-2 early in the day, but ended up winning the next 5 matches. Good luck on the road this weekend Men’s Tennis!
