The Bulldogs are off to one of their best starts in team history as they sit ranked number three in the nation with an undefeated record, but they still have some improvements they need to make in order stay perfect.
It would be very easy for these Bulldogs to rest on their laurels and allow their play up to now to potentially lead to some complacency but with Kirby Smart leading Georgia, we know he will not allow that to happen. Smart has mentioned that he is spending a lot of this “work” week on the Bulldogs improving and getting better.
With that being said, here are the main three areas that I think the Bulldogs will have hoped to improve upon this week.
3. Getting Healthy
Georgia was very banged up going into this week as multiple players have been sitting out in games due to injury. This bye week has come at the right time for the Bulldogs to get healed up and healthy.
Some of the guys the Georgia coaching staff will hope to get back to full strength are defensive lineman Trenton Thompson, who suffered an MCL sprain and inside linebacker Reggie Carter who appears to be out with a concussion. Getting two defensive starters back and giving other members of the team an extra day of rest before their heated contest with the Gators would be a huge boost for the team overall.
2. Incorporating Jake Fromm More
I know the old saying goes “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” but this bye week gives Offensive Coordinator Jim Chaney and his offense a prime chance on finding ways to involve Jake Fromm more in the gameplan.
The Bulldogs will definitely remain a run-first oriented team but if they can find a way to incorporate Fromm more in their attack, then they could make their potent offense even more deadly. Fromm has shown his ability as a quarterback thus far so they need to give him more opportunities to make plays down the field so when the time comes that he is needed to do so, he’ll be ready to answer the call.
1. Get After The Quarterback
Although the rush defense has played a large role in Georgia’s overall success on defense, the Bulldogs’ pass defense still has some areas that need some serious improvement. They will have to find more creative ways of pressuring, and as Kirby Smart says “affecting” the quarterback as they have struggled in this area up to this point.
The Bulldogs are tied for last in the SEC with only 10 sacks on the season as a team and their lack of pressure has led to some big plays occurring on the backend of the defense, which we saw versus Missouri during UGA’s homecoming game back on October 14th. Georgia has some tough quarterback matchups coming up and if they are not able to effectively pressure the quarterback then it could lead to their first loss.
These are the three areas of improvement I’m looking for the Bulldogs to have made in this past “work” week. What are you hoping the Bulldogs improve upon? Please let me know in the comments section.
